Deglacial increase of seasonal temperature variability in the tropical ocean

Lars Woermer et al.

Summary: A study using high-resolution technology to analyze sediments from the Cariaco Basin found that while sea surface temperatures remained stable during the transition into the Holocene, seasonality increased more than twofold and interannual variability intensified.

Quantitative reconstruction of vegetation cover from modern pollen rain in the Cerrado biome of Brazil

Raquel Franco Cassino et al.

Summary: Fossil pollen assemblages are utilized to quantitatively reconstruct past vegetation cover in the Cerrado biome of Brazil, accounting for local vegetation, landscape heterogeneity, and pollen identification accuracy. The method involves criteria definition, comparison with vegetation maps, and development of regression models for different land cover types (forest, savanna, grassland). It provides a new tool to investigate climate drivers and the effects of fire in this Neotropical savanna.

Antarctic surface temperature and elevation during the Last Glacial Maximum

Christo Buizert et al.

Summary: Water-stable isotopes in polar ice cores are widely used as a temperature proxy in paleoclimate reconstruction, but calibration remains challenging in East Antarctica. This study reconstructed the surface cooling during the Last Glacial Maximum in Antarctica using borehole thermometry and firn properties, finding that West Antarctic sites cooled by about 10 degrees C relative to the preindustrial period, while East Antarctic sites showed a cooling range from about 4 degrees to 7 degrees C.
