Achieving strength-ductility balance in a laser powder bed fusion fabricated TiB2/Al-Cu-Mg-Ag alloy

Fuqing Jiang et al.

Summary: A crack-free, strong and ductile Al-Cu-Mg-Ag alloy with TiB2 particles was successfully fabricated using laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF). The microstructure of the alloy was modified and strengthened through subsequent solution and aging. TiB2 particles were found to reduce metallurgical defects and enhance mechanical performance by forming Al3Ti compounds and refining grains. The as-built alloy exhibited excellent combination of strength and ductility, and the heat treatment further improved its yield strength and ultimate tensile strength, while slightly decreasing the elongation to failure. The strengthening mechanisms and plastic instability phenomenon of the alloy were analyzed.

Revealing the precipitation behavior of crack-free TiB2/Al-Zn-Mg-Cu composites manufactured by Laser Powder Bed Fusion

Guichuan Li et al.

Summary: The microstructural evolution and precipitation behavior in age-hardenable TiB2/Al-Zn-Mg-Cu composites manufactured using L-PBF were studied. The composites exhibited a fine equiaxed microstructure with TiB2 particles, resulting in improved hardness compared to unreinforced alloys. The precipitation behavior of the composite was accelerated, mainly due to heterogeneous precipitation on the TiB2 particles and enhanced diffusion along grain boundaries.

Processability and characterization of A20X aluminum alloy fabricated by laser powder bed fusion

M. Ghasri-Khouzani et al.

Summary: The LPBF processing window for A20X aluminum alloy was determined to optimize build rate and reduce fabrication cost. The influence of hatch spacing, laser scan speed, and powder layer thickness on microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated. Near fully dense and crack-free components were achieved within a wide energy density range. The as-built microstructure consisted of an aluminum matrix with TiB2 particles and Al2Cu precipitates, and the volume fraction and size of these phases were independent of process parameters. The grain structure in the vertical section showed isotropic properties, while the yield strength exhibited anisotropy.

Effect of laser contour scan parameters on fatigue performance of A20X fabricated by laser powder bed fusion

H. Karimialavijeh et al.

Summary: Laser contour scanning improves the surface finish and fatigue properties of A20X components produced by laser powder bed fusion. The study evaluated the effects of different contour laser scan speeds and offset distances on mechanical properties and surface characteristics. Decreasing the laser scan speed from 850 mm/s to 350 mm/s resulted in a 50.5% improvement in maximum profile valley depth (Rv) and a 200% improvement in fatigue life. The type and number of pores near the surface were influenced by the laser contour parameters, but subsurface pores did not affect fatigue life.

On the role of building orientation and surface post-processes on the fatigue life of Ti-6Al-4V coupons manufactured by laser powder bed fusion

Antonio Cutolo et al.

Summary: Additive manufacturing (AM) techniques offer efficient material use and the ability to produce complex geometries. However, poor surface quality is a major drawback, particularly for powder-based techniques. This study examines the fatigue properties of miniaturized Ti-6Al-4V specimens produced using laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) and investigates the effects of different surface treatments on fatigue performance. The results show that post-treatments, particularly machining, improve the fatigue properties of L-PBF Ti-6Al-4V samples. Experimental data collected are used to develop a predictive tool for fatigue properties considering surface quality.

Correlation between tensile properties, microstructure, and processing routes of an Al-Cu-Mg-Ag-TiB2 (A205) alloy: Additive manufacturing and casting

Summary: This paper assesses the correlation between microstructure, processing route, and mechanical properties of a high-strength TiB2/Al-Cu-Mg-Ag aluminum alloy (A205 alloy) fabricated using laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) and cast methods. The study focuses on advanced microstructural characterization and tensile flow and strain hardening behavior. The results show that the LPBF material exhibits pronounced discontinuous yielding and enhanced ductility, while the LPBF T7 heat-treated material exhibits plastic instabilities in the inelastic region. These responses are attributed to the high cooling/solidification rates experienced by the LPBF materials.

A Micro-Computed Tomography Comparison of the Porosity in Additively Fabricated CuCr1 Alloy Parts Using Virgin and Surface-Modified Powders

Mirko Sinico et al.

Summary: This study compares dense specimens produced from virgin and surface-modified CuCr1 powder, as well as characterizes a third sample with abnormal porosity content. High-resolution micro-CT scans reveal that the virgin CuCr1 sample has keyhole pores and pit cavities, while the surface-modified sample mainly contains small and spherical equi-distributed metallurgical defects. The presence of W contamination in the third specimen leads to lack-of-fusion pores in subsequent LPBF layers. The different porosity types are connected to the LPBF melting mode, material properties, and potential contaminants.
