Current Scenario and Future Prospects of Endophytic Microbes: Promising Candidates for Abiotic and Biotic Stress Management for Agricultural and Environmental Sustainability

Uttpal Anand et al.

Summary: Globally, substantial research is being conducted on endophytic microbes to increase agricultural and environmental sustainability. Endophytic microbes, such as bacteria, actinomycetes, and fungi, inhabit plant tissues without causing harm and can regulate various host functions. They play a dominant role in nutrient cycling, biodegradation, and bioremediation, and have potential applications in industries. Endophytes can also synthesize bioactive compounds with high competence, making them promising candidates for new drugs. Biotechnological interventions with endophytes have played a pivotal role in crop improvement and could open new avenues in agricultural research and development.

Summary: The effects of aridity on fungal communities associated with prickly pear cactus trees along an aridity gradient were studied. It was found that there were differences in beta diversity between rhizosphere and endosphere, with higher abundance of major phyla in rhizosphere. Arbuscular endomycorrhizal colonization was highest in humid climate and decreased under lower arid conditions, while increased aridity correlated with increased connectivity of soil microbial-root fungal networks in arid soils. Different fungal hubs in each bioclimatic zone sculpted the fungal microbiome network structure.
