Prediction of herpes virus infections after solid organ transplantation: a prospective study of immune function

Dina Leth Moller et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the incidence of positive herpes virus PCR tests during the first year post-transplantation and assess whether a model including immune function could predict subsequent positive tests. The cumulative incidence of positive tests was 36.6%, and the prediction model had an AUC of 77%. Risk scores based on the model allowed for identification of recipients with higher risk.

Impact of methotrexate and adalimumab on immune function of patients with psoriasis

Tanja Todberg et al.

Summary: Methotrexate has minimal effect on cytokine responses, while adalimumab affects a wide range of cytokines involved in immune defense. The cytokine levels in patients receiving long-term adalimumab treatment are almost equivalent to those receiving short-term treatment.

COVID-19 in dialysis: clinical impact, immune response, prevention, and treatment

Khalil El Karoui et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has had significant negative impacts on dialysis patients, increasing their risk of infection and mortality. Vaccination can provide partial protection against infection and severe disease, but immune responses in these patients may be suboptimal. Booster doses and primary prophylaxis strategies may be necessary for persistent poor vaccine responses. Specific therapeutic strategies for established COVID-19 in dialysis patients need further investigation.

Toll-Like Receptor Signaling and Its Role in Cell-Mediated Immunity

Tianhao Duan et al.

Summary: This article provides a detailed overview of the innate immune system's defense mechanisms against pathogens, with a focus on the role of Toll-like receptors (TLRs) in immune responses. TLRs not only link innate immunity to adaptive immunity, but also directly regulate the function of T cells. In addition, the article discusses the critical role of TLR signaling in host defense against infectious diseases, autoimmune diseases, and cancer.

The Induced Immune Response in Patients With Infectious Spondylodiscitis: A Prospective Observational Cohort Study

Josefine Amalie Loft et al.

Summary: This study aimed to analyze the immune response in patients with infectious spondylodiscitis during and after antibiotic therapy, as well as its relationship with the causative pathogen and disease dissemination. The study found that the induced immune response in patients was generally lower at baseline, but increased after antibiotic treatment. After infection clearance, most of the cytokine concentrations returned to the reference range. No significant differences in the induced immune response were found based on the causative pathogen or disease dissemination.

Immune Profiling Enables Stratification of Patients With Active Tuberculosis Disease or Mycobacterium tuberculosis Infection

Darragh Duffy et al.

Summary: TruCulture method can effectively distinguish active tuberculosis from latent infection by stimulating blood samples, providing a more accurate diagnosis for TB cases. The ratio between Mtb antigen and BCG IFN can further improve the stratification of TB diagnosis.

Immunosuppressive Agents and Infectious Risk in Transplantation: Managing the Net State of Immunosuppression

Matthew B. Roberts et al.

Summary: Successful solid organ transplantation requires meticulous attention to immunosuppression details, balancing rejection and infection risks. The state of immune suppression serves as a conceptual framework for infectious risk, with a lack of assays measuring immune function. Adjusting immunosuppression during infections is rarely studied, leading to management largely based on clinical experience.

EASL position paper on the use of COVID-19 vaccines in patients with chronic liver diseases, hepatobiliary cancer and liver transplant recipients

Markus Cornberg et al.

Summary: According to a recent estimate by the World Health Organization, the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has affected nearly 100 million people globally, with patients with chronic liver diseases (CLD) at higher risk of infections. Vaccination against various pathogens, including SARS-CoV-2, is important for these patients, although impaired immune responses may affect the efficacy of immunization. The safety, immunogenicity, and efficacy of SARS-CoV-2 vaccines in patients with CLD, cirrhosis, hepatobiliary cancer, and liver transplant recipients still require further study.

T-cell intrinsic Toll-like receptor signaling: implications for cancer immunotherapy and CAR T-cells

Yasmin Nouri et al.

Summary: TLRs expressed within T-cells serve as important costimulatory and regulatory molecules that enhance T-cell function and memory, while incorporating TLR signaling domains into CAR T-cells allows for the specific exploitation of T-cell intrinsic TLR function, presenting a new opportunity for cancer immunotherapies.

Functional immune reconstitution early after allogeneic haematopoietic cell transplantation: A comparison of pre- and post-transplantation cytokine responses in stimulated whole blood

Lars Klingen Gjaerde et al.

Summary: This study aimed to use a novel standardized whole-blood stimulation system to evaluate differences in functional immune reconstitution in patients early after allogeneic haematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT). Pre-HCT cytokine responses were generally decreased, while post-HCT responses were higher and less correlated, indicating potential immune deficiency.

Stimulated Immune Response by TruCulture(R) Whole Blood Assay in Patients With European Lyme Neuroborreliosis: A Prospective Cohort Study

Mathilde Orbaek et al.

Summary: In this exploratory study on patients with Lyme neuroborreliosis, it was found that the circulating cytokine concentrations in their blood at the time of diagnosis were lower than the reference values. Although the stimulated cytokine release in patients with Lyme neuroborreliosis was slightly lower than in the references, specific patterns of low IL-12 and IFN-gamma indicated a decreased immune response, while low concentrations of IL-17A did not support a strong Th17 response.
