Functions of Gut Microbiota Metabolites, Current Status and Future Perspectives

Juan Liu et al.

Summary: The gut microbiota plays a crucial role in maintaining the physiological functions of hosts by providing signaling metabolites. However, disturbed production of these metabolites can lead to various diseases. This paper discusses the types and ways of action of gut microbiota metabolites, as well as their physiological and pathological functions, such as shaping the composition of the microbiota and acting as nutrition. Understanding the roles of gut microbiota metabolites can guide the development of therapeutic strategies for microbial-driven diseases.

Diabetes remission after bariatric surgery

Maryna Chumakova-Orin et al.

Summary: Obesity rates have continued to rise, in parallel with increasing rates of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Bariatric surgery provides better T2DM resolution in obese patients, with Biliopancreatic diversion and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass showing higher rates of T2DM resolution compared to other procedures.

Adipose tissue inflammation and metabolic dysfunction in obesity

Tatsuo Kawai et al.

Summary: Chronic low-grade inflammation of adipose tissue is linked to metabolic disease and organ complications, mainly caused by the secretion of inflammatory substances by adipocytes and infiltration of immune cells. Despite being low-grade, this inflammation negatively impacts remote organ function and is considered a causative factor of obesity-related complications.

Age range implications of rats over Strongyloides venezuelensis infection

Laiz C. Tavore et al.

Summary: The study found that older rats infected with S. venezuelensis showed higher egg oviposition initially, but experienced a subsequent reduction in egg production, while younger rats had higher egg production after infection. Rats aged 12 and 18 months had more adult worms with lower fecundity, while younger rats had higher reproductive capacity. Additionally, there were differences in the relative organ weights of rats in different age groups.

Laparoscopic Greater Curvature Plication for the Treatment of Obesity: a Systematic Review

Toni El Soueidy et al.

Summary: A systematic review was conducted to evaluate the outcomes of laparoscopic greater curvature plication (LGCP) in the treatment of obesity. The results suggest that LGCP is an acceptable surgical procedure for obesity treatment, especially in settings with limited medical budget. However, existing comparative studies indicate that laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) may be superior in terms of weight loss outcomes.

Summary: The study showed a significant decrease in body weight and fasting glucose levels, as well as an increase in adiponectin levels, after SG and GP surgeries in obese rats with T2DM. This suggests hormonal factors may contribute to weight loss.

Bariatric surgery induces a new gastric mucosa phenotype with increased functional glucagon-like peptide-1 expressing cells

Lara Ribeiro-Parenti et al.

Summary: This study reveals the presence of GLP-1 expressing cells in the stomach, which secrete active GLP-1 and are influenced by weight loss surgeries. Gastric glucose load induces a rapid increase in GLP-1 levels, and obese rats and individuals who undergo surgery exhibit changes in gastric mucosa phenotype.

An easy and low-cost biomagnetic methodology to study regional gastrointestinal transit in rats

Leonardo Pinto et al.

Summary: The study aimed to validate an easy and low-cost methodology (ACB) for assessing regional GI transit in rats through images. The results showed that the correlation coefficient between methods was 0.802, and ACB images presented advantages such as the ability to visualize intrasegmental tracer distribution and automated scan of the segments. The imaging approach provided a reliable assessment of multiple parameters simultaneously and may serve as an accurate and sensitive approach for regional GI research in rats.

Oxidative Stress Profile of Mothers and Their Offspring after Maternal Consumption of High-Fat Diet in Rodents: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

R. Q. Moraes-Souza et al.

Summary: This systematic review identified and evaluated studies with animal models exposed to high-fat diet during pregnancy and/or lactation, showing that offspring of mothers exposed to HFD exhibited higher levels of malondialdehyde and increased reactive oxygen species, as well as lower levels of superoxide dismutase and catalase. Despite significant heterogeneity, the review indicates oxidative stress in offspring induced by maternal HFD.

Nutritional modulation of leptin expression and leptin action in obesity and obesity-associated complications

Sergio Montserrat-de la Paz et al.

Summary: Obesity is characterized by the accumulation and dysregulation of adipose tissue, often accompanied by resistance to leptin and elevated leptin levels. Leptin, a hormone produced by adipose tissue, plays a crucial role in energy homeostasis. Dietary components can modulate leptin metabolism, with some reducing inflammation and enhancing leptin sensitivity, while others may exacerbate chronic inflammation and increase the risk of complications. Research into nutritional mechanisms to restore leptin metabolism could lead to new treatment options for obesity-related disorders.
