Blast mitigation performance of a novel cladding-connector system

Xuejian Zhang et al.

Summary: A novel cladding-connector system consisting of sacrificial cladding and connectors was proposed to protect vulnerable walls in frame structures from blast loads. The system achieved both high energy absorption and low load transfer. The numerical model was established and validated using compression tests and blast tests. Comparisons between systems with flexible and rigid connectors showed that the system with flexible connectors exhibited superior performance in terms of energy absorption and load transfer, especially under intense blasts. The proposed system with flexible connectors was more promising for effectively protecting existing frame structures against blasts.
