The laws and effects of terahertz wave interactions with neurons

Ma Shaoqing et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of terahertz waves on the structure of neurons through modeling and experimentation. The results indicate that the frequency and power of terahertz waves are the main factors influencing field strength and temperature in neurons, and there is a positive correlation between them. Appropriate reductions in radiation power can mitigate the rise in temperature in the neurons, and the use of pulsed waves and short bursts of cumulative radiation is effective. Short-duration cumulative radiation with specific parameters does not cause neuronal death and can promote neuronal growth.

High-frequency terahertz waves disrupt Alzheimer's β-amyloid fibril formation

Wenyu Peng et al.

Summary: A study suggests that high-frequency terahertz waves at a specific frequency can delay the fibrotic process of amyloid accumulation, providing a potential therapeutic strategy for neurodegenerative diseases. These waves resonate with amyloid fibrils and disrupt their structure without side effects on normal cells. Molecular dynamic simulations further support the findings.

Alzheimer's Disease: From Pathogenesis to Mesenchymal Stem Cell Therapy - Bridging the Missing Link

Jingqiong Hu et al.

Summary: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most prevalent neurodegenerative disease worldwide, and the exact mechanisms for its selective degeneration and loss of neurons and synapses remain to be elucidated. Neuroinflammation, especially involving microglia, plays a central role in the pathogenesis of AD. Stem cell therapy, particularly using mesenchymal stem cells, shows potential in targeting multiple mechanisms of action in AD.

Integrating terahertz metamaterial and water nanodroplets for ultrasensitive detection of amyloid β aggregates in liquids

Chao Tang et al.

Summary: This study introduces a label-free method for probing the hydration dynamics of collective A beta aggregates in liquids using terahertz spectroscopy, by utilizing A beta aggregates-containing water nanodroplets to improve signal-to-noise ratio. The integration of a metamaterial sensor and nanoconfined droplets enhances sensitivity, allowing for the detection of low concentrations of A beta aggregates in buffer solutions. This novel approach provides a valuable toolkit for bioanalytical applications in neurobiology and enables tracing ultrafast dynamic biological processes in fundamental science.

Microglia modulation with 1070-nm light attenuates Aβ burden and cognitive impairment in Alzheimer's disease mouse model

Lechan Tao et al.

Summary: Photobiomodulation using 1070-nm light can ameliorate cognitive and memory impairment in AD mouse model by reducing cerebral Aβ burden. The study demonstrates that 1070-nm light triggers microglia responses, leading to decreased Aβ load, and promotes angiogenesis to enhance Aβ clearance in AD mice. This research confirms the important roles of microglia and cerebral vessels in using 1070-nm light for the treatment of AD, and provides a framework for developing a novel therapeutic approach.
