Escape from the garden: spreading, effects and traits of a new risky invasive ornamental plant (Gaillardia aristata Pursh)

Gabriella Sule et al.

Summary: Ornamental plants, such as Gaillardia aristata, have become a major source of invasive species. This study focuses on the distribution and impacts of G. aristata in Hungary. It is found that the species mainly spreads through casual escapes and has a higher invasive potential in sandy soils. Functional traits, such as wide germination adaptability and long flowering period, contribute to its invasiveness in disturbed and species-poor habitats.

Drone-Based Identification and Monitoring of Two Invasive Alien Plant Species in Open Sand Grasslands by Six RGB Vegetation Indices

Laszlo Bakacsy et al.

Summary: Invasive alien species pose a serious threat to biodiversity and ecosystem services and knowing their distribution and spread dynamics is crucial for effective management. Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) monitoring, using RGB color-based vegetation indices, was examined for identifying invasive plant species. The TGI and SSI indices were found to be the most suitable for identifying the cover area of common milkweed, while the IF index was the most suitable for blanket flower. However, the methods used were not suitable for determining milkweed shoot and blanket flower inflorescence number due to significant overestimation.

Accidental Introduction and Spread of Top Invasive Alien Plants in the European Union through Human-Mediated Agricultural Pathways: What Should We Expect?

Chiara Montagnani et al.

Summary: Invasive alien species, particularly those introduced through horticulture and agriculture, have a significant impact on the environment. Accidental introductions of these species through human-mediated pathways can lead to large-scale invasions. It is crucial to address the risks associated with the accidental transport of invasive alien plants through agricultural practices.

Concentration-dependent effects of effusol and juncusol from Juncus compressus on seedling development of Arabidopsis thaliana

Laszlo Bakacsy et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of two compounds from Juncus on the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana, finding that these compounds could increase biomass and maintain antioxidant defense mechanisms, suggesting their potential as new biopesticide or biostimulant plant growth regulators.
