Sedimentary organic matter accumulation provinces in the Santos Basin, SW Atlantic: insights from multiple bulk proxies

Renato S. Carreira et al.

Summary: The study characterized the organic matter (OM) of surface sediments in the Santos Basin using various proxies, such as elemental and isotopic techniques, to understand the processes driving OM transport and accumulation. The results showed distinct OM accumulation provinces in the basin, with shallow sediments being OM-poor but readily hydrolysable, and mid-shelf deposits being muddy and OM-rich and available to heterotrophs. Additionally, relatively OM-rich deposits were found at greater depths, but their composition and nutritional value differed from mid-shelf deposits.

Evaluation of the relationship between biomass of living (stained) benthic foraminifera and particulate organic matter vertical flux in an oligotrophic region, Campos Basin, southeastern Brazilian continental margin

Thaisa Marques Vicente et al.

Summary: This study explores the relationship between vertical POM flux and living benthic foraminifera biomass in the Campos Basin continental slope region. The results show a significant correlation between POM flux, foraminifera biomass, and individual foraminifera species biomass, indicating an influence of mesoscale eddies associated with the Brazil Current System on foraminifera communities in the area.

Untangling the effect of organic matter and dissolved oxygen on living benthic foraminifera in the southeastern Arabian Sea

D. P. Singh et al.

Summary: The study found that bottom water dissolved oxygen and organic carbon in sediments have a significant impact on living benthic foraminifera. By analyzing the relationship between marine environmental parameters and living benthic foraminifera, it is possible to reconstruct past marine productivity and dissolved oxygen concentration.

Bentho-Pelagic Decoupling: The Marine Biological Carbon Pump During Eocene Hyperthermals

Elizabeth M. Griffith et al.

Summary: Future environmental changes are likely to have a profound impact on oceanic ecosystems, affecting the marine biological carbon pump and carbon storage due to a synergistic effect of rising temperatures, reduced mixing and upwelling, ocean acidification, and biogeochemical dynamics. Proxy records commonly used for reconstructing paleoproductivity show significant changes during transient global warming episodes in the past, with potential implications for marine biota and ocean deoxygenation. Carbon cycle modeling suggests enhanced water-column remineralization as a mechanism to explain the observed records, amplifying pCO(2) increase and representing a positive feedback during hyperthermal warming.
