Strengthening and toughening of Cu matrix composites reinforced by metallic glass particles with variable size

Weizong Bao et al.

Summary: Metallic glass particle reinforced CuCrZr composites with excellent mechanical and electrical properties are produced. The size of the metallic glass particles affects the microstructure and properties of the composites. The strength and toughness of the composites increase as the size of the metallic glass particles decreases. The strengthening mechanism is mainly provided by grain boundaries and metallic glass particles, with the fine and dispersed metallic glass reinforcements contributing more to the strength.

Nacre's brick-mortar structure suppresses the adverse effect of microstructural randomness

Yi Yan et al.

Summary: In this study, a tension-shear-chain (TSC) network model was used to investigate the effects of microstructural randomness in nacre. The results showed that the staggered brick-mortar structure rendered nacre insensitive to micro-structural randomness and enhanced its resistance at weaker interfaces. The study also revealed the influence of microstructural randomness on the size effect of the ensemble mechanical properties of nacre.

Controlling failure regimes in Brick-and-Mortar structures

Georgia Hunter et al.

Summary: This study reports the existence of a "two-peak" and a "peak-plateau-peak" failure regime in Brick-and-Mortar structures, and demonstrates that these regimes can be controlled by adjusting geometric and material parameters. The transition from the "two-peak" to the "peak-plateau-peak" failure regime significantly increases the toughness of the structure.

Deformation behavior of a nanoporous metallic glass at room temperature

Zhifu Zhang et al.

Summary: The mechanical properties and plastic deformation of a Cu(55.4)Zr(35.2)Al(7.5)Y(1.9) nanoporous metallic glass (MG) were studied. It was found that the nanoporous MG is brittle in tension and has significant homogeneous plasticity under compression. The study clarifies the fundamental failure mechanism and deformation behavior in nanoporous MGs.

Constitutive modeling of size-dependent deformation behavior in nano-dual-phase glass-crystal alloys

Linli Zhu et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the constitutive analysis of size-dependent deformation behaviors in micropillars of a NDPGC alloy, aiming to explore the mechanical properties of the material at different grain sizes. Experimental and numerical results show that reducing grain size can increase the yield strength of NDPGC micropillars without causing the inverse Hall-Petch effect. This suggests that controlling the microstructural size can optimize the mechanical performance of NDPGC alloys.
