Protein adsorption to diethylaminoethyl-dextran grafted macroporous cellulose microspheres: A critical pore size for enhanced adsorption capacity and uptake kinetic

Liangzhi Qiao et al.

Summary: In this study, four diethylaminoethyl-dextran grafted macroporous cellulose microspheres with different pore sizes were used to investigate the adsorption equilibria and kinetics of bovine serum albumin (BSA) and gamma-globulin. The results showed that both proteins exhibited increasing-then-decreasing trends with decreasing pore size. Furthermore, a critical pore size (CPZ) was identified at which the adsorption capacity and uptake kinetics were significantly enhanced for both proteins.

Equilibrium, kinetics and breakthrough curves of acetaminophen adsorption onto activated carbons from microwave-assisted FeCl3-activation of lignin

A. Gomez-Aviles et al.

Summary: Activated carbons were prepared by chemical activation of lignin with FeCl3 using microwave heating, resulting in a microporous carbon with high surface area and acidic properties. The adsorption of acetaminophen reached about 300 mg.g(-1) at 60 degrees C, with an endothermic process and increased randomness observed. The kinetics was described by pseudo-second order model and breakthrough curves fitted well to various adsorption models, showing potential for application in water treatment.

A comprehensive investigation of external mass transfer and intraparticle diffusion for batch and continuous adsorption of heavy metals using pore volume and surface diffusion model

Mohd Danish et al.

Summary: Separation of heavy metals from water bodies is crucial for the protection of human, marine life, and the environment. The adsorptive separation of heavy metals using cheap and environmentally friendly biosorbents shows promise. This study applies the pore volume and surface diffusion (PVSD) model to investigate the mass transfer processes involved in the adsorption of Cu (II), Cd (II), and Pb(II) using different biosorbents. The PVSD model is able to accurately predict concentration decay and breakthrough curves for batch and continuous modes.

Grafting diethylaminoethyl dextran to macroporous cellulose microspheres: A protein anion exchanger of high capacity and fast uptake rate

Liangzhi Qiao et al.

Summary: In this study, a high-performance anion exchanger is developed by grafting DEAE-dextran on macroporous cellulose microspheres. The DEAE-dextran grafted MCMs show a higher adsorption capacity and faster mass transfer rate compared to traditional non-grafted DEAE modified anion exchangers. The results demonstrate the potential of DEAE-dextran grafted MCMs as high-performance ion exchangers.

Boronate-immobilized cellulose nanofiber-reinforced cellulose microspheres for pH-dependent adsorption of glycoproteins

Shasha Li et al.

Summary: High-strength self-reinforced all-cellulose microspheres (SCMs) were fabricated using cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) as fillers, which possessed excellent selectivity. The combination with stiff CNFs enabled efficient stress transfer during the separation process, and the homogeneous surface chemistry and pore structure characteristics made SCMs a more suitable adsorbent material.

Application of Crystalline Matrices for the Structural Determination of Organic Molecules

Ashley D. Cardenal et al.

Summary: Single-crystal X-ray diffraction is a powerful technique for structural determination of organic molecules, but its applicability is limited by the requirement of suitable crystals. The use of preformed matrices that can absorb and stabilize organic compounds offers a way to overcome this limitation. The discussion focuses on the analysis of organic compounds in crystals and the absolute structure determination of chiral molecules using these preformed matrices.

Removal of hazardous dyes, toxic metal ions and organic pollutants from wastewater by using porous hyper-cross-linked polymeric materials: A review of recent advances

Abdul Waheed et al.

Summary: Water quality is crucial for the well-being of living organisms on Earth, but increasing human population and industrialization are rapidly contaminating water resources. Clean drinking water is becoming scarce globally, especially in developing countries. Therefore, there is an urgent need for cost-effective, accessible, and eco-friendly technologies to meet the high demand for clean water.
