Agronomic management practices in dryland wheat result in variations in precipitation use efficiency due to their differential impacts on the steps in the precipitation use process

Yang Wen-jia et al.

Summary: Yield loss in dryland crop production due to low precipitation use efficiency (PUE) is common. PUE is determined by a complex process of precipitation use in farmland, quantified by six ratios. In this study, four agronomic management systems were evaluated, and it was found that manure or biochar integrated systems significantly increased PUE and wheat yield. Specific steps such as infiltration and storage, consumption, and transpiration efficiency were influenced by the management systems. To improve PUE and yield in rainfed wheat, focus should be on increasing T/ET and SW/SWe while maintaining ET/SW and SWe/P at appropriate levels.

The Changes in Various Physio-Biochemical Parameters and Yield Traits of Faba Bean Due to Humic Acid Plus 6-Benzylaminopurine Application under Deficit Irrigation

Khaled M. A. Ramadan et al.

Summary: Implementing deficit irrigation has become a major strategy in crop production, but it can lead to changes in plant physiology and decreased productivity. This study aimed to assess the effects of humic acid and cytokinin on faba bean under water deficit. The results showed that the combination of H-10 and C-25 improved faba bean growth and increased physiological traits under low water supply. The application of H-10 and C-25 also achieved nutrient homeostasis in faba bean under water deficit.

The potential for soil C sequestration and N fixation under different planting patterns depends on the carbon and nitrogen content and stability of soil aggregates

Yanli Wang et al.

Summary: The winter wheat-summer maize rotation system in the Huang-Huai-Hai Plain may lead to soil quality degradation and increased greenhouse gas emissions. Our three-year field experiment compared the effects of different planting patterns on soil organic carbon (SOC) and total nitrogen (TN) sequestration. The winter wheat-soybean (W-S) rotation pattern was found to have higher SOC and TN stocks, indicating its potential in enhancing soil carbon and nitrogen sequestration capacity.

Effects of residual film on maize root distribution, yield and water use efficiency in Northwest China

Pengpeng Chen et al.

Summary: The extensive use of plastic film in farmland has led to the accumulation of residual film, which has a significant negative impact on agricultural production. Residual film affects root growth and vertical distribution in maize, leading to decreased root length, reduced dry matter in stems, leaves, and ears, and decreased evapotranspiration, grain yield, and water use efficiency. Residual film beyond 180 kg ha-1 has a significant negative effect on summer maize.

Influence of Silicon Forms on Nutrients Accumulation and Grain Yield of Wheat Under Water Deficit Conditions

Emad M. M. Salem et al.

Summary: This study investigated the potential of different forms of silicon (Si) to mitigate drought-induced reduction in wheat yield and changes in nutrient accumulation. The results showed that applying Si reduced zinc and manganese accumulation and increased Si content in wheat plants. Spraying any form of Si significantly increased all agronomic traits of wheat compared to the control. Irrigation at 100% of crop evapotranspiration ratio was the most effective treatment for enhancing wheat productivity.

Summary: The study found that applying 60% of crop water requirements with peanut straw mulch or weeding can significantly reduce weed biomass in onion cultivation. Using peanut straw mulch under 80% crop water requirements can achieve acceptable marketable bulb yield, NPK contents, flavonoids content and economic returns comparable to using 100% crop water requirements.

Copper Nanoparticle Application Enhances Plant Growth and Grain Yield in Maize Under Drought Stress Conditions

Dong Van Nguyen et al.

Summary: Copper nanoparticle priming enhances drought tolerance in maize by increasing leaf water content and plant biomass, as well as anthocyanin, chlorophyll, and carotenoid contents, while decreasing reactive oxygen species accumulation and increasing reactive oxygen species scavenging enzyme activities. Additionally, applying copper nanoparticles increases total seed number and grain yield under drought stress conditions, suggesting a promising approach for the production of drought-tolerant crop plants.

Effect of Irrigation Water and Organic Fertilizer on Reducing Nitrate Accumulation and Boosting Lettuce Productivity

Shaimaa Hassan Abd-Elrahman et al.

Summary: This study aimed to limit the accumulation of nitrate (NO3-) in lettuce leaves by adjusting the balance between fertilization and irrigation. The findings showed that using vermicompost or biochar under different irrigation regimes could increase soil potassium content and improve lettuce yield. Irrigating organically-fertilized lettuce with 80% instead of 100% of crop evapotranspiration resulted in higher lettuce productivity and lower nitrate content.

Temperature and precipitation are adversely affecting wheat yield in India

Anand Madhukar et al.

Summary: This study analyzes 50 years of climate and wheat crop data in India to understand the relationship between climate and crop yield. The findings show that temperature has been increasing significantly across all Indian states, while precipitation change has been statistically insignificant. The study highlights the adverse impact of temperature and precipitation on wheat yield, with February temperature and March precipitation having the most negative effects. Climate variability explains up to 78% of the variability in wheat yield across Indian states. These results emphasize the need for immediate attention and development of adaptation strategies to address climate change and its impact on wheat production.

Kun Jia et al.

Summary: With increasing water resources stress, this study investigates the water requirements of winter wheat and summer maize in the lower reaches of the Yellow River Basin from 1981 to 2019 and their response to climate change. The results show that the temperature has increased while sunshine duration, relative humidity, and wind speed have decreased. Crop water requirements exhibit a significant decreasing trend, with wind speed identified as the dominant factor.

Summary: Estimating water balance is crucial for improving water productivity and managing crop production efficiently in fields with soil property variability. Two agricultural system models were used to simulate crop yield, water balance, and WP, with one model showing higher simulation accuracy. The geostatistical characteristics of the simulated data differed from measured data, impacting the interpolation precision of spatial distribution maps. More work is needed to enhance the robustness and prediction accuracy of the models for spatial implementation.
