Surface change of microplastics in aquatic environment and the removal by froth flotation assisted with cationic and anionic surfactants

Hongru Jiang et al.

Summary: Microplastics (MPs) are released into the environment due to the widespread usage and improper management of plastics. This study found that exposure to the natural environment increases the hydrophilicity of MPs. The flotation efficiency of different types of MPs decreased to zero after six months of natural incubation in rivers. Surfactants were applied to enhance the hydrophobicity and flotation efficiency of MPs.

Zhongkai Duan et al.

Summary: In this study, the effect of sulfidation on the production of Fe(IV) in S-mZVI/PDS system was investigated. It was found that sulfidation changed the pathway of Fe(IV) generation, and the heterogeneous process played an important role in activating PDS to produce Fe(IV). Sulfidation not only accelerated Fe(II) release but also enhanced electron transfer, leading to increased Fe(IV) production.

Performance Enhancement of Biogenetic Dulfidated Zero-Valent Iron for Trichloroethylene Degradation: Role of Extracellular Polymeric Substances

Anqi Wang et al.

Summary: Chemical sulfidation is effective in improving the reactivity of zero-valent iron (S-ZVI). Inspired by the biogeochemical process of sulfidation in nature, researchers explored the biogenetic sulfidation of ZVI (BS-ZVI) using sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB). BS-ZVI showed a degradation rate of 96.3% for trichloroethylene (TCE), comparable to S-ZVI (97.0%), but with a slower degradation rate due to extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) excreted by SRB. Organic components of EPS, including polysaccharides, humic acid-like substances, and proteins, were detected in BS-ZVI. The acetylation degree of EPS increased with ZVI and S/Fe concentration, inhibiting TCE degradation. Overall, this study demonstrated the potential of biogenetic sulfidation as an alternative method for improving the reactivity of ZVI.

Unveiling the Neglected Roles of Chloride and Sulfate in the Removal of Nitro Compounds by Sulfidated Zero-Valent Iron/Ferrous Ion Systems

Shiwen Sun et al.

Summary: This study compared the performances of S-ZVI/FeCl2 and S-ZVI/FeSO4 systems for the removal of chloramphenicol (CAP) and nitrobenzene (NB). The results showed that FeCl2 and sulfidation had a synergistic promoting effect on the reaction, but FeSO4 could not promote the removal of nitro compounds by S-ZVI. Both NaCl and Na2SO4 could effectively promote the reaction, but the promotion effect of Na2SO4 weakened with the decrease of pH.

Pentavalent vanadium and hexavalent uranium removal from groundwater by woodchip-sulfur based mixotrophic biotechnology

Huan Liu et al.

Summary: Mining and smelting of vanadium uranium ore leads to the release and coexistence of vanadium and uranium in the environment, posing severe risks. This study investigated the feasibility of synchronous removal of pentavalent vanadium (V(V)) and hexavalent uranium (U(VI)) using a mixotrophic column reactor packed with woodchips and elemental sulfur (S-0). The results showed that the removal efficiencies of U(VI) and V(VI) ranged from 55.1 to 80.7% and 52.2 to 99.5%, respectively. Several functional V(V) and U(VI) reducing microorganisms were identified, and they formed close partnerships. The study suggests that mixotrophic processes offer promising strategies for the simultaneous management of V(V) and U(VI) contaminated groundwater.

Degradation of atrazine by Ni-doped sulfidated microscale zero-valent iron: Mechanistic insights for enhanced reactivity and selectivity

Fangming Tian et al.

Summary: The sulfidation of microscale zero-valent iron particles (S/mZVI) has been widely recognized as a method to improve reactivity and selectivity. In this study, different types of nickel-sulfidated composite mZVI particles were synthesized by adjusting the sequence of nickel doping and sulfidation. The reactivity and selectivity towards atrazine in groundwater were compared, and the underlying mechanisms were investigated. The results showed that Ni/S-mZVI exhibited higher removal rate of atrazine and reduced hydrogen accumulation compared to S/mZVI. The enhanced removal rate was attributed to the generation of atom hydrogen and direct reduction mediated by electron transfer. Meanwhile, the reduced hydrogen evolution reaction in Ni/S-mZVI can be explained by the involvement of Fe oxides. Overall, the bimetallic modification of S/mZVI is a promising strategy for groundwater remediation.

Is it possible to efficiently and sustainably remove microplastics from sediments using froth flotation?

Hongru Jiang et al.

Summary: This study innovatively applied froth flotation to remove microplastics from beach and lake sediments. It was found that sediment particles adhered to microplastics surfaces, preventing air bubbles from attaching to the microplastics. The effects of various factors on microplastic flotation were systematically investigated, and a flotation process combined with sodium oleate showed promising results for microplastics removal. In addition, metal ions adsorbed on microplastics surfaces played a role in linking microplastics and sediment particles. Life cycle assessment and economic assessment confirmed the effectiveness and cost advantage of froth flotation for microplastics removal.

Effect of sulfidation on nitrobenzene removal from groundwater by microscale zero-valent iron: Insights into reactivity, reaction sites and removal pathways

Kai He et al.

Summary: This study investigates the removal of nitrobenzene by sulfidated microscale zero valent iron (mZVI) and reveals that sulfidation enhances the reactivity of mZVI by providing higher iron utilization efficiency and stronger passivation resistance. The optimal conditions for nitrobenzene reduction were found to be with a sulfide to iron molar ratio of 0.1, resulting in complete transformation of nitrobenzene to aniline. The study also demonstrates that sulfidated mZVI can be applied in real field remediation for faster nitrobenzene reduction in groundwater/soil systems.
