Short-term Lake Erie algal bloom prediction by classification and regression models

Haiping Ai et al.

Summary: In order to improve control and management, the recent outbreaks of harmful algal blooms in the western Lake Erie Basin have received significant attention. A comprehensive literature review was conducted to address the limitations of existing models. A large dataset was compiled, and machine learning-based classification and regression models were built for 10-day scale bloom predictions. By analyzing feature importance, 8 key features for HAB control were identified. The models achieved high accuracy and the LSTM model provided short-term forecasts even without feature values.

Hydrodynamic impacts on algal blooms in reservoirs and bloom mitigation using reservoir operation strategies: A review

Yang Song

Summary: Algal blooms are increasing in reservoirs due to global warming and eutrophication, and the hydrodynamic conditions play a crucial role in algal growth. By inducing unfavorable hydrodynamic environments through reservoir operations, algal blooms can be controlled efficiently and cost-effectively. However, there is a lack of systematic reviews and application of reservoir operation strategies for bloom control, limiting progress in the field.

Composite iron-carbon constructed wetland combined with photocatalytic film to restore eutrophic water body and the hydraulic performance of constructed wetland

Ming Ye et al.

Summary: Eutrophication is a global environmental issue that impairs water quality, threatens drinking water safety, and hinders regional economic development. This study proposes an effective technical program, utilizing a composite iron-carbon constructed wetland combined with a photocatalytic film, to restore eutrophic water. The experimental results show significant improvement in water quality after treatment, with a large number of microalgae on the wetland exerting a reoxygenation effect and enhancing the self-purification capacity of the water body. Enhancing the hydraulic performance of constructed wetlands and the activity of photocatalytic films can improve the remediation of eutrophic water bodies.

Restoration from eutrophication in interconnected reservoirs: Using a model approach to assess the propagation of water quality improvements downstream along a cascade system

Laura Melo Vieira Soares et al.

Summary: In this study, a model was used to simulate water quality restoration practices in a cascade system along the Tiete River in Brazil. The findings showed effective restoration techniques that can improve water quality and propagate to downstream reservoirs. This research provides guidance for restoration practices in other basin catchments.

Temporal dependence of chlorophyll α-nutrient relationships in Lake Taihu: Drivers and management implications

Wei Zou et al.

Summary: Eutrophication and algal blooms are significant environmental challenges for lakes worldwide. This study examined the relationships between nutrient levels (total nitrogen and total phosphorus) and chlorophyll a in Chinese Lake Taihu from 2005 to 2020. The results showed robust linear relationships, and recommended nutrient thresholds for the lake. Additionally, the study found that factors such as temperature, water level, wind speed, nitrogen to phosphorus ratio, and grazing influenced the sensitivity of chlorophyll a to nutrients, and atmospheric stilling was identified as a key climatic factor affecting algal blooms in Lake Taihu.

A framework for exploring environmental risk of the longest inter-basin water diversion project under the influence of multiple factors: A case study in China

Chi Zhang et al.

Summary: This article introduces a multivariate risk assessment method based on Vine Copula theory and Monte Carlo simulation to evaluate the risk of algal proliferation in the Middle Route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project of China. The results demonstrate that water temperature can serve as an appropriate early-warning indicator of algal proliferation, and corresponding early-warning intervals and control measures are proposed.

Ping Cao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of different velocities on the removal of benthic algae from river beds. It found that a flow velocity range of 1.4-1.7 m/s effectively reduced filamentous algae while retaining diatoms and blue-green algae.

Temporal distribution patterns of phytoplankton and their drivers in Lake Poyang (China)-A monthly study from 2011 to 2019

Lili Xiong et al.

Summary: The hydrological conditions in Lake Poyang are complex due to its connection with the Yangtze River, leading to unique drivers of phytoplankton distribution. Phytoplankton density has been increasing annually, with water temperature, water flow velocity, and Secchi depth identified as key drivers. Changes in dominant genera are influenced by nutrients and water flow velocity, with decreases in nutrient concentrations observed in recent years.

Experimental Study of the Quantitative Impact of Flow Turbulence on Algal Growth

Haiping Zhang et al.

Summary: This study found that under the experimental conditions, the growth rate of Microcystis aeruginosa was higher in turbulent environments than in still water environments; the peak growth rate of Microcystis aeruginosa occurred when the turbulent energy dissipation rate was 6.44 x 10(-2) m(2)/s(3). Additionally, the maximum rate of photosynthetic oxygen evolution occurred when the turbulent intensity was 0.19 m(2)/s(3).

Hydrological management strategies for the control of algal blooms in regulated lowland rivers

Jian Li et al.

Summary: The study found that differences in river morphology and background nutrient levels lead to significant variations in critical flow velocities for algal bloom outbreaks, and there is no uniform threshold flow velocity for algal bloom control. Additionally, years with and without algal blooms exhibit significant differences in river hydrological and hydraulic conditions, with joint operation of cascade reservoirs and diversion projects proving to be an effective method for preventing and controlling algal blooms.

Predicting algal blooms: Are we overlooking groundwater?

Andrea E. Brookfield et al.

Summary: Advances in understanding and predicting freshwater algal bloom dynamics have highlighted the significant role of groundwater inputs in modulating algal growth, depending on unique local conditions. The distinct chemistry of groundwater can either support or prevent algal blooms, with key mechanisms including the redox state of the subsurface and stability of groundwater discharge. More research is needed to improve predictions of algal blooms by considering changes in land use, water management, and climate impacting groundwater dynamics.

Nitrite-responsive hydrogel for long-term and smart control of cyanobacteria bloom

Jialiang Xiong et al.

Summary: The frequent occurrence of cyanobacteria blooms has led to serious environmental consequences and economic losses. The traditional method of algae control has limitations, while the new design based on nitrite-responsive hydrogel shows potential to better control the release of algaecide and reduce the risks associated with overdosing.

Large lake sluice operations during an extreme rainfall season greatly affect circulation and water quality dynamics of a shallow eutrophic lake

Zhaoliang Peng et al.

Summary: The study quantified the potential effects of large lake sluice operations on water quality parameters of Lake Chaohu in China using a lake model, showing that higher lake water release rates led to accelerations in current velocity and increased concentrations of ammonium nitrogen, total nitrogen, total phosphorous, and chlorophyll-a. The modeling results also demonstrated that the effects of lake sluice operations were pronounced for four months after the operations. Higher release rates during the operation phase may help decrease TN and TP concentrations during the subsequent period as well.
