A Review on Sustainable Manufacturing of Ceramic-Based Thin Films by Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD): Reactions Kinetics and the Deposition Mechanisms

M. Sabzi et al.

Summary: Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) is a process where a solid is formed on a substrate through chemical reactions in the vapor phase. It allows for the coating of various materials, such as ceramic nanocomposites, dielectrics, and single crystalline silicon, onto different substrates. The design of a CVD system is influenced by factors like substrate dimensions, temperature, chemical composition, deposition process, chamber temperature, material purity, and production economics. Surface reaction kinetics, mass transfer reactions, and desorption reactions are involved in the CVD process. Thermodynamically, CVD requires high temperatures and low pressures. Kinetic control is used at low temperatures, while diffusion control is applied at high temperatures. Coatings in CVD are typically deposited at temperatures ranging from 900 to 1400 degrees Celsius. By controlling chamber temperature, precursor purity, and precursor flow rate, it is possible to partially control deposition rate and microstructure of ceramic coatings during the CVD process.

Wire arc additive manufacturing of network microstructure (TiB+TiC)/Ti6Al4V composites using flux-cored wires

Zhuorui Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) process using flux-cored wire was developed to fabricate Ti6Al4V matrix composites reinforced with TiB and TiC particles. The introduction of reinforcement resulted in the formation of a refined net-basket-dominated (alpha+beta)-Ti matrix and a stable network microstructure. The microhardness of the samples increased with increasing reinforcement fraction, but the wear resistance decreased in the 10 wt% sample due to the reduced ductility.

The influence of austenitization temperature on microstructural developments, mechanical properties, fracture mode and wear mechanism of Hadfield high manganese steel

H. R. Jafarian et al.

Summary: The effect of austenitization temperature on a high carbon Hadfield steel was investigated, revealing that increasing temperature reduced carbides and increased grain size while enhancing strength, hardness, and wear resistance at the expense of ductility. Lowering the austenitization temperature increased the share of a ductile fracture mode.

The influence of aluminum on microstructure, mechanical properties and wear performance of Fe-14%Mn-1.05%C manganese steel

S. H. Mousavi Anijdan et al.

Summary: Increasing the Al content in the Fe-14%Mn-1.05%C steel led to larger austenite grain size, reduced carbide precipitation, higher yield strength, hardness, and wear resistance but lower tensile strength, ductility, and energy absorption capability. Wear mechanism was identified as abrasive wear in the form of parallel grooves on the worn surfaces. Additionally, increasing Al content decreased friction coefficient, weight loss, and surface damage.

Microstructural evolution, mechanical properties and wear behavior of in-situ TiC-reinforced Ti matrix composite coating by induction cladding

Min Wei et al.

Summary: In this work, in-situ fabrication of TiC/Ti composite coatings was achieved using high-frequency induction heating under an argon atmosphere, and the microstructural evolution, phase changes, mechanical properties, and tribological behavior of the coatings were systematically investigated. The results indicate that the dissolution-precipitation mechanism governs the in-situ growth of TiC reinforcements, and the morphology, dimensions, and distribution of TiC phase in the coatings are strongly influenced by various factors such as the composition of raw powders and crystal structure of TiC.
