Single LiCl-driven synthesis of heptazine-/triazine-based crystalline carbon nitride homojunction for enhanced solar hydrogen evolution

Zhengliang Zhao et al.

Summary: LiCl-based molten salts are commonly used to polymerize melamine-derived monomers or intermediates into crystalline carbon nitrides. However, the role of LiCl beyond its melting point reduction has not been fully investigated. In this study, we discovered that single LiCl can promote the deamination of melon-based carbon nitride, leading to the formation of a crystalline carbon nitride with heptazine/triazine units. The resulting homojunction exhibits a significantly higher photocatalytic H2 evolution rate compared to pristine carbon nitride, thanks to the enhanced charge separation between heptazine and triazine units in the phase homojunction. This work highlights the diverse modulation of carbon nitride framework using single LiCl and its potential for advanced photocatalytic applications.

Bio-reduced Ag nanoparticle decorated on ZnO for enhancement of photocatalytic reduction of hexavalent chromium and photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B

Chitiphon Chuaicham et al.

Summary: Organic components from Jasmine tea leaves were used to reduce Ag nanoparticles, which were then decorated on ZnO through a hydrothermal reaction to fabricate AgNPs@ZnO composite. The composite showed enhanced performance in photocatalytic reactions for the degradation of rhodamine B and reduction of hexavalent chromium compared to pure ZnO, attributed to its superior capacity to separate and transport photo-generated electron-hole pairs. The formation of new electron trapping levels and the reduction of energy band gap were confirmed by the presence of surface defects on ZnO in the composites, leading to enhanced light absorption and reduced charge recombination.

Summary: The ternary CdS/BiVO4/g-C3N4 (CBG) hybrid semiconductor photocatalyst was synthesized via a hydrothermal technique and characterized using various techniques. The CBG hybrid semiconductor exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity for the degradation of Methylene Blue (MB) aqueous dye under visible light, with a degradation rate of about 94.5% after 120 minutes. The enhanced photocatalytic activity can be attributed to the construction of heterojunctions among g-C3N4, CdS, and BiVO4, which improves charge transfer efficiency.

Core shell heterojunction interface in green synthesized Sm3+ions doped ZnO nano-particles to promote the charge separation for efficient photocatalytic applications

Anamika Kem et al.

Summary: In this study, the core-shell heterojunction of Sm3+ ions doped ZnO nanoparticles was synthesized using a green synthesis technique, and their photocatalytic activity for degrading methyl green dye molecules under UV light was investigated. Structural and morphological studies were carried out using XRD and TEM techniques. It was found that the crystallite size of the nanoparticles decreased with increasing concentration of Sm3+ ions, indicating the inhibition of nanoparticle growth. The Sm3+: ZnO nanoparticles showed irregular core-shell heterojunction, leading to enhanced charge partition. EDX analysis confirmed the appropriate incorporation of Sm3+ ions into the ZnO lattice. The optical energy band gap and photoluminescence emissions of the nanoparticles were also studied. The 10 wt% Sm3+: ZnO nanoparticles demonstrated the highest photodegradation efficiency towards methyl green dye, achieving a degradation rate of 91% under UV light irradiation for 50 minutes. The efficiency of the catalyst remained stable after multiple cycles.

Fabrication of Fe2O3/BiVO4 heterojunction by doping method to improve the solar water splitting performance of BiVO4

Lan Wu et al.

Summary: A composite photoanode Fe2O3/BiVO4 with excellent photoelectric properties is reported in this study, which was prepared by a simple doping method using BiVO4 photoanode as substrate. The heterojunction formation between BiVO4 and Fe2O3 promotes carrier separation and transfer, effectively increasing carrier density. Simultaneously, the Fe2O3 layer provides photocorrosion protection for BiVO4, enhancing its photoelectric performance and stability. At 1.23 V vs. RHE, the photocurrent density of the composite photoanode was 1.3 mA cm-2, 3.25 times higher than that of the pure BiVO4 electrode, with a negative shift of 230 mV in the initial potential. Fe2O3/BiVO4 photoanode exhibits satisfactory photocurrent density, providing a feasible scheme for the preparation of new heterogeneous photoanodes.
