Structure and fermentation characteristics of five polysaccharides sequentially extracted from sugar beet pulp by different methods

Chengxiao Yu et al.

Summary: Pectic polysaccharides can be a superior alternative to commercial prebiotics for gut fermentation. Different polysaccharides extracted from sugar beet pulp showed varying impacts on the human fecal microbiome, with some promoting beneficial bacteria and reducing pathogenic bacteria. The monosaccharide composition may play a critical role in modulating the microbiota, providing insights for selecting polysaccharides to better influence gut health.

Foam-in-vein: Rheological characterisation of liquid sclerosing foams using a pipe viscometer

Alireza Meghdadi et al.

Summary: This study presents a novel method for the rheological characterization of sclerosing foams, revealing the dependence of their flow behavior on vessel diameter and liquid-to-gas ratio. The results demonstrate that sclerosing foams behave as shear-thinning fluids and have a direct correlation between foam dryness and viscosity. Additionally, low injection flowrates are shown to result in higher therapeutic efficacy for dilated varicose veins.

Microwave and ultrasound assisted extraction of pectin from various fruits peel

Pinar Karbuz et al.

Summary: In this study, pectin was extracted from waste lemon, mandarin, and kiwi peel using ultrasound and microwave-assisted extraction methods. Kiwi peel gave the highest pectin yield when treated with UAE at 75 degrees C for 45 min and MAE at 360 W for 3 min using HCl as the solvent. This study concluded that MAE was a more efficient and rapid technique for pectin extraction from fruit peels compared to UAE.

A pectin methyltransferase modulates polysaccharide dynamics and interactions in Arabidopsis primary cell walls: Evidence from solid-state NMR

Alex Kirui et al.

Summary: This study used solid-state NMR to investigate the structure of cellulose and pectin in Arabidopsis plants, revealing a highly branched arabinan structure in pectin mutants and tighter associations between cellulose and pectin in the mutants. The findings shed light on polymer structure and packing in pectin mutants, providing insights into how pectin influences cell wall architecture, mechanics, and plant growth at the nanoscale.

Dietary pectic substances enhance gut health by its polycomponent: A review

Dongmei Wu et al.

Summary: Pectic substances, found in vegetables and fruits, can inhibit gut inflammation and relieve symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease. Their physiological functions are structure-dependent, with subtle changes impacting gut microbiota and immune system homeostasis. The immunomodulated property of pectic substances relies on chemical composition and physical structure characteristics, influencing gut health through mechanisms like regulating immune cells and enhancing barrier function.

Effects of postharvest ripening on physicochemical properties, microstructure, cell wall polysaccharides contents (pectin, hemicellulose, cellulose) and nanostructure of kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa)

Hui Wang et al.

Summary: The study revealed that postharvest ripeness of kiwifruit results in changes in its physicochemical properties, with an increase in total soluble solids and water-soluble pectin, and a decrease in starch, water-insoluble pectin, and hemicellulose content. During storage, depolymerization of hemicellulose and pectin was observed, while cellulose content and the diameter of individual microfibrils remained relatively stable.
