A frictional cohesive zone model for characterizing transverse compression responses of unidirectional fiber-reinforced polymer composites

Ruoyu Li et al.

Summary: In this study, a cohesive zone model considering the effect of friction is proposed to describe the interfacial mechanical responses of fiber/resin composites. The impact of interface friction on the mechanical behaviors of composites is investigated through the development of microdroplet finite element model and representative volume element model.

Prediction of temperature-dependent transverse strength of carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites by a modified cohesive zone model

X. W. Yuan et al.

Summary: A temperature-dependent micromechanical model was proposed to estimate the transverse mechanical properties of carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites. The model considered the random distribution of fibers, the temperature-dependent Young's modulus of the polymer, and the plasticity model of the polymer. A modified cohesive zone model with temperature-dependent parameters was presented for simulating the fiber/polymer interface. The model was validated by experimental results and found to be reliable and accurate.

Effects of debonding repairment on interfacial damage and thermal deformation of CRTS II slab ballastless track

Daobin Yan et al.

Summary: The effects of debonding repairment on interfacial damage and thermal deformation of CRTS II slab ballastless track are evaluated in this study. An improved mixed-mode bilinear cohesive zone model is utilized to provide more accurate prediction of the interfacial damage. A finite element model of CRTS II slab ballastless track, considering debonding repairment, is developed to simulate the interfacial damage and structural deformation under field-measured temperature gradient loads. The results indicate that debonding repairment restores the thermal deformation resistance of CRTS II slab ballastless track, but this capacity gradually decreases with the accumulation of interfacial damage. Re-debonding in the upper interlayer may lead to the emergence of an opposite-sided debonding in the lower interlayer. Furthermore, implementing debonding repairment with rebar implantation significantly reduces the re-debonding height.

The effect of composite structural parameters on tribo-mechanical characteristics and thermal conductivity of self-lubricant composites

Fatemeh Shahramforouz et al.

Summary: This article investigates the impact of structural parameters on the tribological, mechanical, and thermal functions of composites. The hybrid-Kevlar/PTFE-55 degrees composite exhibited the best tribological and mechanical performance, with tungsten carbide (WC) used to increase thermal conductivity. The results may aid in developing self-lubricant composites embedded in WC fillers applicable in bearings.

Experimental and numerical analysis on mode II fracture toughness of CFRP adhesive joints using a nonlinear cohesive/friction coupled model

Qiong Rao et al.

Summary: In this study, a nonlinear cohesive/friction coupled model was proposed to analyze the mode II fracture of carbon fiber composite bonded joints with hybrid carbon nanofillers. Experimental results showed that the adhesive modified with 0.75 wt% MWCNTs/GNPs hybrid improved the fracture toughness by 45% compared to pure adhesive. The proposed model combined a phenomenological progressive rising friction model and an exponential cohesive zone model for the analysis of delamination in the adhesive layer.

Mechanical and failure analysis of thick composites under hygrothermal conditions by a novel coupled hygro-thermo-mechanical multiscale algorithm

Meghdad Gholami et al.

Summary: A novel algorithm, HTM-multiscale-APFEA, is developed to accurately predict the mechanical and failure behavior of thick fiber-reinforced laminated composites under hygrothermal conditions. The algorithm considers the effects of temperature and moisture on the material properties and has been verified against experimental data.
