Control effects of different herbicides on Spartina alterniflora

Yutong Wang et al.

Summary: As an invasive species, Spartina alterniflora has caused serious harm to coastal wetland ecosystems. This study explored the control effects of different herbicides on S. alterniflora and optimized the chemical control technology. The results showed that haloxyfop-R-methyl can effectively control S. alterniflora and can be used to eliminate newly invaded small areas of S. alterniflora, but it is not recommended to use herbicides in large areas.

The relationships between soil physicochemical properties, bacterial communities and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon concentrations in soils proximal to coking plants

Jingqi Du et al.

Summary: Microbial degradation is the major pathway for the removal of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from the environment. Farmland soil has a higher abundance of PAH-degrading bacterial communities compared to wasteland soil.

Invasion of Spartina alternilora in the coastal zone of mainland China: Control achievements from 2015 to 2020 towards the Sustainable Development Goals

Huiying Li et al.

Summary: This study assesses the effectiveness of Spartina alternilora management during China's implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) from 2015 to 2020. The results show a consistent reduction in the extent of S. alternilora, indicating the efficacy of control measures. Provinces such as Zhejiang, Jiangsu, and Shanghai have successfully managed S. alternilora, while regions with more severe invasion require better management. The study emphasizes the need for objective evaluation and weighing of S. alternilora's potential utilities and governance effectiveness to achieve maximum ecological benefits and promote sustainable coastal ecosystems.

Efficient removal of Spartina alterniflora with low negative environmental impacts using imazapyr

He-Bo Peng et al.

Summary: The herbicide imazapyr effectively removes smooth cordgrass without significant collateral damage to other organisms and the environment. Application of imazapyr resulted in the death of all plants within 10 months and inhibited the germination and flowering processes. Imazapyr residues were detected in the environment but at low concentrations that decreased over time. No residues were found in macrobenthos, and the density of these organisms did not decrease.

Impact of twenty pesticides on soil carbon microbial functions and community composition

Jowenna X. F. Sim et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of different pesticides on soil carbon cycling related enzymatic activities and absolute abundance of functional genes, as well as the changes in cellulolytic and chitinolytic microorganisms and the total microbial community composition. The results suggest that pesticide application may have a negative impact on soil carbon cycle and the stability of soil organic matter and structure.

Un-biodegradable and biodegradable plastic sheets modify the soil properties after six months since their applications

S. Acconcia et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of non-biodegradable and biodegradable plastic sheets on soil properties and phytotoxicity. The results showed that exposure time to the plastics had a greater impact on soil properties than the type of plastics. The presence of non-biodegradable plastic sheets decreased soil pH, respiration, and dehydrogenase activity, while increasing total and organic carbon concentrations. On the other hand, the presence of biodegradable plastic sheets decreased dehydrogenase activity and increased organic carbon concentrations.

Biochemical and cellular responses of the freshwater mussel, Hyriopsis bialata, to the herbicide atrazine

Pattanan Nuchan et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the biochemical and cellular responses of the freshwater mussel, Hyriopsis bialata, to the herbicide atrazine. The results showed that the mussels were resistant to atrazine and did not show significant changes in detoxification enzymes. However, DNA damage was observed in all tissues of the treated mussels. This suggests that H. bialata could be a potential candidate for monitoring aquatic toxicity using DNA damage as a biomarker.

Trifluralin residues in soils from main cotton fields of China and associated ecological risk

Yang Li et al.

Summary: The study investigated the concentrations and distribution of trifluralin residues in soil samples from major cotton-producing areas in China, showing varying levels of trifluralin across regions and a significant correlation with soil organic matter content. Risk assessment revealed low risk to earthworms but high risk to wheat, barley, and lucerne in cotton soils contaminated with trifluralin. This research contributes to understanding the residual situation of trifluralin in Chinese cotton soil, assessing environmental risks, and promoting safe use of the herbicide in cotton field cultivation.
