Plant-derived natural products for drug discovery: current approaches and prospects

Noohi Nasim et al.

Summary: Nature provides a rich source of drugs that can be used in modern medicine, either individually or in combination. These drugs include small bio-molecules, plant-made biologics, and phytopharmaceutical drugs. The development of phytopharmaceutical medicines is based on the traditional medicine system and the concept of polypharmacology, where natural products can target multiple physiological processes. This article summarizes different approaches for phytopharmaceutical drug development and discusses progress in identifying drug targets using systems biology and computational tools. The article also reviews existing drug delivery methods and analytical techniques for plant material authentication and fingerprinting, as well as the role of biopharming in developing plant-based biologics.
