The Origin of Solvent Deprotonation in LiI-added Aprotic Electrolytes for Li-O2 Batteries

Aiping Wang et al.

Summary: In aprotic Li-O-2 batteries, LiI and LiBr are used as soluble redox mediators (RMs) in the electrolytes to improve the slow kinetics of oxygen evolution during charging. Compared to LiBr, LiI has a redox potential closer to the theoretical discharge product, indicating higher energy efficiency. However, the reason for solvent deprotonation in LiI-added electrolytes has been unclear. Through calculations and experiments, it is found that the nucleophile IO3- triggers the solvent deprotonation and LiOH formation via nucleophilic attack. In contrast, the formation of BrO3- in LiBr-added electrolytes is thermodynamically unfavorable, explaining the absence of LiOH formation. These findings provide important insights into solvent deprotonation and have implications for the practical use of LiI RMs in aprotic Li-O-2 batteries.

A molecular sieve-containing protective separator to suppress the shuttle effect of redox mediators in lithium-oxygen batteries

Xinbin Wu et al.

Summary: Researchers have synthesized a polymer-based composite protective separator containing molecular sieves to inhibit the shuttle effect of redox mediators (RMs) in lithium-oxygen (Li-O-2) batteries. The nanopores in the zeolite powder can physically prevent the migration of larger molecules, thereby restraining the shuttle effect. With the assistance of zeolite molecular sieves, the cycle life of Li-O-2 batteries is significantly extended.

Hydroperoxide-Mediated Degradation of Acetonitrile in the Lithium-Air Battery

Rory C. McNulty et al.

Summary: Understanding and eliminating degradation of the electrolyte solution is crucial in developing high energy density lithium-air batteries. The use of acetonitrile provides similar stability to current glyme ethers, but the mechanism for its degradation is unknown. By studying the degradation of acetonitrile in the lithium-air battery, a correlation between H2O concentration and deviation from the ideal electron/oxygen ratio is revealed. Acetamide is identified as the major degradation product, and a new degradation pathway involving lithium hydroperoxide is proposed.

Ion sieve membrane: Homogenizing Li+ flux and restricting polysulfides migration enables long life and highly stable Li-S battery

Wan-Yue Diao et al.

Summary: By designing a multifunctional separator composed of Cu-based metal-organic framework (Cu-MOF) and Li-Nafion, the problems of dendritic Li growth and polysulfide shuttle effect in lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries have been addressed. The Cu-MOF with its homogeneous porous structure and abundant Lewis acidic sites promotes uniform Li+ flux and exhibits a strong chemical interaction with polysulfides to inhibit the shuttle effect. Additionally, the narrow pore size distribution and negatively charged gap in the Cu-MOF act as an ion sieve to facilitate Li+ passage and restrict the migration of polysulfide anions, synergistically mitigating dendritic Li growth and polysulfide shuttling.
