Rapid formation of bioaggregates and morphology transition to biofilm streamers induced by pore-throat flows

Sang Hyun Lee et al.

Summary: Bioaggregates are dense porous materials consisting of microorganisms, organic and inorganic matters, and water, which are commonly found in natural and engineered porous media and often cause clogging. The formation mechanism of bioaggregates in porous media systems is largely unknown, but this study shows that it is driven by the interplay of biomass viscoelasticity and hydrodynamic conditions at pore throats. The study also reveals that shear stress triggers morphological changes in bioaggregates, leading to disruptions in flow.

Effect of microfluidic channel geometry on Bacillus subtilis biofilm formation

Song Liu et al.

Summary: Biofilms are microbial colonies encased in an extracellular polymer matrix self-secreted through bacterial proliferation and differentiation, and their formation is closely related to flow field parameters. Shear stress and secondary flow play roles in biofilm adhesion, with biofilm structure evolving from loose to dense as adhesion rate increases. The study provides new insights into biofilm adhesion in natural and industrial fluid environments.

An open-source computational tool for measuring bacterial biofilm morphology and growth kinetics upon one-sided exposure to an antimicrobial source

Sarah Gingichashvili et al.

Summary: In this study, computational analytics were used to quantify the morphological response of Bacillus subtilis to the proximity of an antimicrobial source. The results revealed that the inner core, characterized by wrinkled formations, is more preserved compared to the periphery. Additionally, a crescent-shaped colony morphology and changes in the growth substrate of macrocolonies exposed to the antimicrobial were observed.

Modeling the impact of evolving biofilms on flow in porous media inside a microfluidic channel

Shahab Karimifard et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that the overall permeability of porous media, flow pathways, and overall/local pressure gradients are highly dependent on biofilm ratio and biofilm permeability when biofilm levels are high and intermediate. However, the impact of biofilm porosity is moderate in these cases. Simplified biofilm geometries can provide reasonable approximations of permeability when biofilm structures are well developed.

The feedback interaction between biomass accumulation and heterogeneous flow in porous media: Effect of shear stresses

Dongfang Ke et al.

Summary: This study investigated bioclogging in heterogeneous porous media using a reactive-transport model, finding that biomass accumulation is mainly controlled by substrate transport and shear stresses impact hydraulic conductivity homogenization. Significant shearing-induced detachment resulted in increased heterogeneity in hydraulic conductivity and a macroscopic correlation was established between porosity reduction and hydraulic conductivity reduction due to biomass growth. Flow velocity and shearing-induced biomass detachment were identified as significant factors affecting this correlation.
