Comparison of peroxodisulfate and peroxymonosulfate activated by microwave for degradation of chlorpyrifos in soil: Effects of microwaves, reaction mechanisms and degradation products

Xiao Shang et al.

Summary: The combination of microwave and persulfate (peroxodisulfate and peroxymonosulfate) was found to have a synergistic effect on the degradation of chlorpyrifos in soil. Microwave played both non-thermal and thermal effects in activating the persulfate, leading to superior degradation of chlorpyrifos. Different reactive oxygen species were generated in the two systems, resulting in different degradation pathways and products. Appropriate reaction conditions were determined. Environmental factors and the different selectivity of reactive oxygen species affected the degradation efficiency. The study evaluated the practical significance of the microwave/persulfate approach for CPF-contaminated soils.

Efficient microwave-assisted mineralization of oxytetracycline driven by persulfate and hypochlorite over Cu-biochar catalyst

Qiaozhi Zhang et al.

Summary: MW-assisted catalytic degradation of organic pollutants using Cu-loaded biochar catalysts showed high efficiency in the mineralization of refractory and high-concentration oxytetracycline. Reactive oxidizing species, which were barely detectable in a conventional heating system, played a crucial role in achieving the high efficiency in MW-assisted oxidation systems. The interactions between CuBC and MW were revealed by correlating the physiochemical characteristics to the MW absorption ability. These proposed catalytic systems have significant implications for the development of a high-throughput and low-carbon wastewater treatment technology.

Activated persulfate and peroxymonosulfate based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for antibiotics degradation-A review

Zhila Honarmandrad et al.

Summary: Sulfate radical advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOP) have been successfully utilized for the degradation of antibiotics in water and wastewater treatment. This review discusses the mechanisms and applications of SR-AOPs in antibiotics degradation. The progress in this field, including the most promising developments and remaining challenges, is highlighted. The most susceptible and persistent oxidation groups of pharmaceuticals are summarized, and the highest effectiveness is reported for degradation of pharmaceuticals at ppb level. A scavenging effect is observed when the oxidant dose is 0.7 mM for the persulfate (PS) and 2 mM for the peroxymonosulfate (PMS). Future development requires simple persulfate activation systems for real matrix treatment.

Comparison of hydroxyl-radical-based advanced oxidation processes with sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes

Jaimy Scaria et al.

Summary: The sulfate-radical-based advanced oxidation process (SRAOP) has gained significant attention as a potential replacement for hydroxyl-radical-based advanced oxidation process (HR-AOP) in recent years. While SRAOP has the advantage of overcoming limitations associated with HR-AOP, such as acidic pH requirement and interferences by environmental components, its mineralization efficiency remains a concern.

Chloride-Enhanced Removal of Ammonia Nitrogen and Organic Matter from Landfill Leachate by a Microwave/Peroxymonosulfate System

Ke Feng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the removal characteristics of NH4+-N and organic matter in landfill leachate with high chloride ion content. The results showed that increasing chloride ion concentration improved the production of hypochlorous acid in the MW/PMS system, and that MW irradiation had an important influence on the activation of PMS. The high concentration of hypochlorous acid produced by the system can remove NH4+-N in situ and participate in the reaction with pollutants.

Degradation of Antibiotics via UV-Activated Peroxodisulfate or Peroxymonosulfate: A Review

Tiehong Song et al.

Summary: UV-based advanced oxidation processes, such as UV/H2O2, UV/O3, UV/PDS, and UV/PMS, generate hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and sulfate radicals (SO4·-) for degrading organic substances. SO4·- is considered more advantageous than ·OH, making the activation of PDS and PMS a hot research topic. In particular, the use of UV-activated PDS and PMS for removing antibiotics in water has received significant attention. However, a systematic review on the application of UV/PDS and UV/PMS for antibiotics degradation is lacking.
