Clinical expert consensus on the assessment and protection of pancreatic islet ll-cell function in type 2 diabetes mellitus

Jian Zhu et al.

Summary: This article discusses the pathophysiological characteristic of β-cell dysfunction in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and highlights the importance of assessing and protecting β-cell function. β-cell function can be clinically assessed using methods based on blood glucose or methods that combine blood glucose and endogenous insulin or C-peptide levels. Measures such as weight loss and early and sustained euglycemia control can effectively protect β-cell function, while newly developed drugs such as Sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors and Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists can improve β-cell function independently of glycemic control.

Impact of short-term glycemic variability on risk of all-cause mortality in type 2 diabetes patients with well-controlled glucose profile by continuous glucose monitoring: A prospective cohort study

Yifei Mo et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between short-term glycemic variability (GV) and all-cause mortality in patients with type 2 diabetes. The research found that even in patients with seemingly well-controlled glucose levels, greater GV was associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality.

Insulin secretion and action affect glucose variability in the early stages of glucose intolerance

Rumyana Dimova et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the relationship between insulin secretion and sensitivity, and daily glucose variability (GV) in the early stages of dysglycemia. The results showed that impairment of glucose tolerance was associated with worsening GV, and the increase in GV was inversely related to insulin secretion and action.

Summary: This study investigated glycaemic variability patterns in patients with T1D, T2D, and LADA. The results showed a continuous spectrum of GV across these diabetes types. More frequent glucose monitoring is recommended for patients with impaired insulin secretion.

Defining the target value of the coefficient of variation by continuous glucose monitoring in Chinese people with diabetes

Yifei Mo et al.

Summary: The study defined the target value for glycemic variability in Chinese diabetes patients and found that patients on premixed or intensive insulin therapy had increased %CV. In each treatment group, individuals with %CV > 33% had a higher risk of hypoglycemia.
