Indocyanine green derived carbon dots with significantly enhanced properties for efficient photothermal therapy

Yuxiang Jiang et al.

Summary: A modified version of traditional dye indocyanine green (ICG), called indocyanine green-derived carbon dots (ICGCDs), has been synthesized through a simple hydrothermal treatment. The ICGCDs exhibit significantly improved thermal stability, anti-photobleaching, and photothermal properties compared to ICG. They show great potential as efficient NIR bioimaging and photothermal agents in both in vitro and in vivo experiments. The strategy demonstrated in this study is likely to have broad applications in other systems.

A Metal-Free Mesoporous Carbon Dots/Silica Hybrid Type I Photosensitizer with Enzyme-Activity for Synergistic Treatment of Hypoxic Tumor

Boshi Tian et al.

Summary: A metal-free type I photosensitizer with peroxidase-like activity has been developed for synergistic treatment of hypoxic tumors. It can effectively generate O-2(center dot-) under low oxygen conditions upon 640nm light irradiation, inducing apoptosis of tumor cells. Additionally, the photosensitizer catalyzes the conversion of endogenous H2O2 into (OH)-O-center dot in the tumor microenvironment, further synergistically ablating tumor cells.

Reversible Photooxygenation of Anthracene Carboxyimide for Singlet Oxygen Formation: Mechanistic Study and Efficient Nitrite Detection

Yanhai Ni et al.

Summary: Polycyclic aromatic endoperoxides are important sources of singlet oxygen (O-1(2)) and the photooxygenation of anthracene carboxyimides has not been reported due to their competing photodimerization reaction. This study describes the reversible photo-oxidation of anthracene carboxyimides, revealing the formation of racemic mixture of chiral hydroperoxides instead of the expected endoperoxide. The photoproduct undergoes photo- and thermolysis to form O-1(2). The anthracene carboxyimide also exhibits high selectivity and sensitivity for nitrite anions in acidic aqueous media and possesses stimuli-responsive behavior.

The synthesis and anti-cancer efficacy of endoperoxide modified copper sulfide-ferritin nanocages as PDT and PTT agents

Merve Kucukoflaz et al.

Summary: The aim of this study is to synthesize core-shell nanocages (10-Aft-CuS) with the synergistic effect of both photothermal therapy (PTT) and photodynamic therapy (PDT) by functionalizing the surface of the Apoferritin (Aft) nanocage platform with an endoperoxide derivative and forming ultra-small CuS nanoparticles in its inner cavity for the first time. The synthesized 10-Aft-CuS nanocages showed high anti-tumor efficacy against malignant melanoma in vitro and in vivo, increasing the effectiveness against cancer cells.

A Targeting Singlet Oxygen Battery for Multidrug-Resistant Bacterial Deep-Tissue Infections

Yiwen Zhu et al.

Summary: Traditional photodynamic therapy (PDT) is limited in treating deep infections due to insufficient penetration of light and oxygen. A targeting singlet oxygen delivery system, CARG-Py, was designed for irradiation-free and oxygen-free PDT. The system converted to CARG-O-1(2) released singlet oxygen without external irradiation or oxygen and showed potential in efficient treatment of deep infections. This work provides a new strategy to improve traditional PDT for irradiation- and oxygen-free treatment of deep infections while improving convenience.
