The Past and the Future of Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett Films

Osvaldo N. Oliveira et al.

Summary: The Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique allows for controlled assembly of organic molecules with almost 100 years of history. While LB films are seldom considered for practical applications today, they offer unique opportunities in mimicking cell membrane models and exploiting nanoarchitectonics concepts.

Triptycene-Based Molecular Rods for Langmuir-Blodgett Monolayers

Eva Kaletova et al.

Summary: In this study, a fully modular synthesis approach was used to obtain three representative rigid molecular rods. These rods can form sturdy monolayers on various surfaces. The compounds were characterized using X-ray diffraction and capillary electrophoresis, revealing their crystal structure and acidity. Langmuir-Blodgett monolayers were successfully formed, and atomic force microscopy was used to visualize the structure of one of the films. These geometrically unique molecules have great potential in the field of supramolecular architecture.

Molecular Bending: An Important Factor Affecting the Packing of Self-Assembled Monolayers of Triptycene-Based Molecular Rods ona (111) Gold Surface

Igor Roncevic et al.

Summary: This study identifies molecular bending as a crucial factor affecting the self-assembly of rod-shaped organic molecules on a gold surface. The experiment shows that originally straight molecules bend into a J-shape upon adsorption on the metallic surface. Density functional theory calculations further confirm these experimental observations.
