Dynamic characteristics of helical gear with root crack and friction

Shuai Mo et al.

Summary: Helical gear transmission is smooth and has many advantages. However, long-term operation will cause root cracks, which will reduce the time-varying meshing stiffness (TVMS) of the gears, increase the transmission error (LSTE), and reduce the load distribution ratio (Lsr). According to the slice method and the energy method, a TVMS calculation model for a helical gear pair with cracks was established, and the effects of crack parameters on the gear were studied. The study also investigated the changes in TVMS, LSTE, and load distribution ratio under time-varying friction and crack conditions. The results provide a theoretical foundation for studying the dynamic characteristics of gear cracks and friction faults, as well as vibration and noise reduction.

A One-Dimensional Convolutional Neural Network-Based Method for Diagnosis of Tooth Root Cracks in Asymmetric Spur Gear Pairs

Onur Can Kalay et al.

Summary: This study proposed a one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1-D CNN) model to diagnose tooth root cracks for standard and asymmetric involute spur gears. The dynamic characteristics of asymmetric gears and the advantage of tooth asymmetry in detecting tooth cracks were investigated. The findings showed that using an asymmetric (20 degrees/30 degrees) tooth profile could improve the classification accuracy of the developed 1-D CNN model by up to 12.8% compared to a standard (20 degrees/20 degrees) design.

Crack detection of a modified high contact ratio gear

Omar D. Mohammed

Summary: To investigate the possibility of early fault detection, this article focuses on the impact of gear tooth addendum dimension on high contact ratio (HCR) gears as compared to low contact ratio (LCR) gears. The study examines twenty different crack cases and evaluates the mesh stiffness and dynamic response of both LCR and HCR gear designs. The results show that the fault detection indicators have less increase with crack size in the HCR design, making it less sensitive to fault detection.

Fault Signal Simulation and Service Condition Monitoring of Cracked Gear System

Xianzeng Liu et al.

Summary: A simulation approach is proposed to monitor the fault status of cracked gear systems in this work. The approach calculates the dynamic response signals from a dynamic model of the cracked gear system. First, the time-varying meshing stiffness (TVMS) of the cracked gear pair (CGP) is computed using the slicing method considering the coupling effect. Second, a novel 12 DOF dynamic model is constructed using TVMS and tooth nonequilibrium moment. Fault features of the cracked gears are then extracted by investigating the dynamic response. The results demonstrate that the proposed method effectively monitors the condition of cracked gear systems, and the condition indicators are sensitive to the cracked status and system resonance.

Summary: Detection of compound faults in rotating machinery is a challenge in fault diagnosis. This study proposes a novel Lagged Information Spectrum (LIS) method that reduces the effect of noise and separates the signatures of compound faults. Experimental results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method in isolating fault characteristic frequencies and generating higher quality spectra.

Yanrui Jin et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a novel deep learning method for compound fault diagnosis, achieving high accuracy through a decoupling attentional residual network, multi-label decoupling classifier, and active learning approach. The method can reach the same accuracy with a small number of compound fault samples as using a large number of samples, reducing the labeling workload for domain experts.

A study of effects of tooth surface wear on time-varying mesh stiffness of external spur gear considering wear evolution process

Wei Chen et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the impact of tooth surface wear on gear mesh stiffness, considering wear evolution process. Numerical results show that wear can lead to significant reductions in mesh stiffness, and the mean decrease of stiffness is almost proportional to the maximum tooth wear in the initial wear evolution process.

Numerical Modelling of Vibration Responses of Helical Gears under Progressive Tooth Wear for Condition Monitoring

Xiuquan Sun et al.

Summary: Gear wear is a common fault in gear transmission systems that can lead to decreased operating efficiency and potentially catastrophic failures. This study utilized numerical simulations to investigate the impact of wear on dynamic responses, revealing that high slide-to-roll ratios result in wear mainly occurring at the gear root, causing increased vibrations. The research also demonstrated that wear leads to reductions in gear mesh stiffness and amplifications of gear mesh frequency amplitudes, serving as monitoring features for progressive gear wear.

Quantifying the separability of data classes in neural networks

Achim Schilling et al.

Summary: The Generalized Discrimination Value (GDV) measures how well different data classes separate in each layer of an artificial neural network, reaching reproducible values at the end of training regardless of weight initialization. Temporal reduction of class separability is necessary for complex data sets, marked by an 'energy barrier' in the initial part of the GDV(L) curve. Remarkably, the GDV(L) follows a fixed 'master curve' for a given data set, independent of the number of network layers. Its invariance with respect to dimensionality makes GDV a useful tool for comparing internal dynamics of neural networks with different architectures.
