Influence of a heavy rainfall event on nutrients and phytoplankton dynamics in a well-mixed semi-enclosed bay

Haiwen Han et al.

Summary: With a warming climate, extreme precipitation events are projected to occur more frequently in the future, affecting water quality in coastal waters. This study examined the response of Jiaozhou Bay to Typhoon Damrey, showing that rainfall provided high concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus to phytoplankton, leading to increased chlorophyll-a levels. River runoff was found to be the primary source of nutrients, with atmospheric deposition playing a limited role. Enhanced ecological monitoring of rivers and atmospheric deposition is essential to predict ecosystem responses to extreme rainfall events.

What drove the nonlinear hypoxia response to nutrient loading in Chesapeake Bay during the 20th century?

Wenfei Ni et al.

Summary: Previous analysis revealed the correlation between the expansion of hypoxia in Chesapeake Bay and increased riverine nutrient loading, but the driving processes behind this hypoxia response remained unclear. Using a validated hydrodynamic-biogeochemical model, a simulation was conducted to examine dissolved oxygen levels during a 40-year period of increased nutrient loading. The model successfully reproduced the observed decline in oxygen concentration and expansion of hypoxic volume, with water column respiration identified as the dominant driver of hypoxia expansion.

Interactions between sediment processes and ecosystem responses in the Green Bay of Lake Michigan

Bahram Khazaei et al.

Summary: Green Bay, located in the Laurentian Great Lakes basin, is a degraded freshwater estuary with environmental and public health issues due to human interventions. Restoration programs, including monitoring, research, and action plans, have been developed to address these challenges. However, the fate and transport patterns of sediments in Green Bay are not well understood, and advanced computing techniques offer opportunities to refine this understanding.

The seas around China in a warming climate

Fan Wang et al.

Summary: Increasing temperatures in the seas around China have led to multifaceted changes in the functions and services provided by these seas. The warming climate has resulted in increased surface temperatures, frequency and intensity of marine heatwaves, as well as changes in nutrient concentrations and composition in coastal waters. These changes have had complex effects on primary productivity and marine organisms, such as the northward invasion of warm-water species and miniaturization. Strengthened multidisciplinary oceanographic research is necessary to further understand and address these coupled physical-ecological changes in the seas around China.

Identifying Sources and Impacts of Precipitation-Derived Nitrogen in Narragansett Bay, RI

Sawyer J. Balint et al.

Summary: Anthropogenic impacts on nitrogen cycling have changed ecosystems globally, particularly in coastal estuaries. The study in the Narragansett Bay, RI, showed the direct impact of precipitation-derived nitrogen on nutrient dynamics, especially in summer phytoplankton blooms. Further research is needed to understand the magnitude and spatial heterogeneity of precipitation-derived nitrogen in a future wetter climate.

Benthic-Pelagic Coupling in the Oligotrophic Eastern Mediterranean: A Synthesis of the HYPOXIA Project Results

Panagiotis D. Dimitriou et al.

Summary: The HYPOXIA project investigated the ecological processes of eutrophication and its potential irreversible changes in the eastern Mediterranean marine ecosystems. The project found that nutrient inputs in the water column can quickly lead to the bloom of specific species with high nutrient uptake capabilities. The coastal ecosystems in the region have shown high resilience to eutrophication.

Nutrient limitation of phytoplankton in Chesapeake Bay: Development of an empirical approach for water-quality management

Qian Zhang et al.

Summary: Understanding the temporal and spatial roles of nutrient limitation is crucial for successful management strategies in Chesapeake Bay. Analysis of historical data shows expanded areas of nitrogen limitation and reduced nutrient saturation in response to long-term reductions in nitrogen load. However, nutrient limitation patterns remain largely unchanged in the majority of the mainstem, indicating the need for further reduction in nutrient loads to achieve a less nutrient-saturated ecosystem.

Benthic exchange along a tropical estuarine salinity gradient during dry season: Biogeochemical and ecological implications

Anil Pratihary et al.

Summary: The study found that in the Mandovi Estuary in Western India during the dry season, benthic respiration, organic carbon mineralization, and nutrient exchange rates varied significantly along the salinity gradient, with benthic metabolism accounting for a significant portion of total community respiration. Nitrogen exchange was mainly controlled by salinity, while phosphorus exchange was influenced by sedimentary iron content and bottom water oxygen levels.

Quantifying Importance of Macrobenthos for Benthic-Pelagic Coupling in a Temperate Coastal Shelf Sea

Summary: The benthic oxygen flux in the German Bight is influenced by a complex interplay of hydrodynamics, bioturbation, and bedform morphodynamics, with macrobenthos playing a dominant role in diffusive flux. Bioturbation contributes significantly to oxygen consumption and distribution of particulate organic carbon in sediments, with different roles in sandy versus muddy seabed environments.

Elevated organic carbon pulses persist in estuarine environment after major storm events

Eero Asmala et al.

Summary: Estuaries play a crucial role in regulating the transport of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from land to ocean. The impact of tropical cyclones on terrestrial DOC in estuaries can overwhelm the abiotic and biotic degradation capacity, leading to an enhanced shunt of terrestrial carbon to the coastal ocean.
