MDSCs in sepsis-induced immunosuppression and its potential therapeutic targets

Wanying Zhang et al.

Summary: Sepsis is a life-threatening condition resulting from an uncontrolled host response to infection. Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs), which consist of pathologically activated neutrophils and monocytes, play an important role in inhibiting innate and adaptive immune responses. This review explores the characteristics and suppressive mechanisms of MDSCs, and discusses their potential applications as biomarkers and targets for clinical treatment of sepsis.

Myeloid-Derived Suppressor Cells (MDSC) in the Umbilical Cord Blood: Biological Significance and Possible Therapeutic Applications

Nikoleta Bizymi et al.

Summary: Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) have the ability to inhibit immune responses in cancer, infection, and trauma. However, they can also have positive effects in specific situations, such as suppressing graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Human umbilical cord blood (UCB) contains a rich source of MDSCs and their myeloid progenitor cells, which have potential applications in treating GVHD, autoimmune and inflammatory diseases.

Myeloid derived suppressor cells in tumor microenvironment: Interaction with innate lymphoid cells

Nicola Tumino et al.

Summary: Human myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSC) play a significant role in immunosuppression in the tumor microenvironment (TME), while innate lymphoid cells (ILC) contribute to controlling tumor growth. Despite the potential of cellular immunotherapy, many patients do not benefit from these treatments. Understanding the biology of MDSC could be an important target for tumor immunotherapy to decrease immunosuppression and enhance immune cell anti-tumor activity.

Summary: Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) play a role in both pathological and non-pathological conditions, including cancer, infections, pregnancy, aging, and vaccination. Vaccination is a crucial public health measure, but the presence of MDSCs may impact vaccine efficacy.

Summary: Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs), immature cells of myeloid origin, have gained attention as promising biomarkers and therapeutic targets. They exhibit immunomodulatory properties and can be targeted in precision medicine and experimental hematology research. However, there are challenges in defining cell-surface markers and gating strategies for MDSC populations.

Interaction Between MDSC and NK Cells in Solid and Hematological Malignancies: Impact on HSCT

Nicola Tumino et al.

Summary: MDSC are heterogeneous populations that can suppress both innate and adaptive immune effector cells through the release of soluble factors and cell-to-cell interactions. NK cells, on the other hand, play a major role in counteracting tumor growth as part of the innate immunity response.
