The safe fast-charging of lithium-ion batteries is crucial for the rapid development of electric vehicles. This paper proposes a new charging method that balances lithium plating prevention and maximum temperature control, saving charging time and ensuring battery safety.
The safe fast-charging of lithium-ion batteries is one of the key technological challenges constraining the rapid development of electric vehicles. The development of larger-capacity, larger-sized batteries has presented new challenges to the advancement of safe fast-charging technology. The primary risks of fast charging are lithium plating and thermal runaway. The essence of safe fast charging lies in the control of temperature and lithium-ion intercalation rates into the lattice. In this paper, a new charging method that balances lithium plating prevention and maximum temperature control is proposed through experimental testing and Simulink-Fluent co-simulation. The results show that compared to traditional charging methods, this charging strategy can save 48.2 precents of the charging time. And it can control the maximum battery temperature to stay within 50 degrees C. This charging strategy can guarantee high-speed charging rates while taking into account battery safety. This method provides new perspectives for further advancing fast-charging technologies in the electric vehicle industry.
