The ShGlomAssay Combines High-Throughput Drug Screening With Downstream Analyses and Reveals the Protective Role of Vitamin D3 and Calcipotriol on Podocytes

Marie-Christin Ristov et al.

Summary: Chronic kidney disease is a significant global public health burden, affecting over 500 million people worldwide. This study demonstrates the use of high-throughput screening methods to identify potential drugs for CKD. The study suggests that the vitamin D signaling pathway may play a protective role in podocytes, the cells responsible for the majority of CKD cases.

Development of a human iPSC line (SMBCi017-A) from a healthy donor

Zhenzhong Han et al.

Summary: In this study, a human induced pluripotent stem cell line was derived from urine cells of a healthy male donor. The generated iPSCs showed normal karyotype, expressed chromosomal stability pluripotency hallmarks, and differentiated into the three primary germ layers.

Using CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing in human iPSCs for deciphering the pathogenicity of a novel CCM1 transcription start site deletion

Robin A. Pilz et al.

Summary: Variants in non-coding regions of the CCM1 gene can have significant impact on protein function and gene expression, leading to cerebral cavernous malformations. This study demonstrates the importance of considering regulatory regions in genetic analyses and shows that modeling variants using iPSCs can aid in diagnosing unknown clinical significance variants.

Induced pluripotent stem cells and cerebral organoids from the critically endangered Sumatran rhinoceros

Vera Zywitza et al.

Summary: There are less than 80 Sumatran rhinos left on Earth, facing continuous population decline due to habitat loss and limited breeding possibilities. The use of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) presents a powerful tool to combat extinction by preserving genetic material and studying species-specific developmental processes. In this study, researchers successfully generated iPSCs from the last male Malaysian Sumatran rhino and demonstrated their high quality and potential in supporting the rescue of this critically endangered species.

Expression of canonical transient receptor potential channels in U-2 OS and MNNG-HOS osteosarcoma cell lines

Florian Lassig et al.

Summary: The study found that Mas-dependent alterations in osteosarcoma cell line proliferation were not mediated by changes in TRPC subtype gene expression. The data shows that the signaling pathways examined can regulate the expression of TRPCs at the mRNA level. Targeting TRPC subtypes through specific signaling pathways may offer potential for improving osteosarcoma treatment.
