Flow and deformation behaviors of cementitious materials through nozzles with different geometric parameters: Experimental and numerical approaches

Tinghong Pan et al.

Summary: Nozzle geometric parameters play a crucial role in controlling the flow and deformation behaviors of printed filament. This study investigated the effects of various geometric characteristics of nozzles on the flow and deformation behavior of printing ink through experiments and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation. The results showed that the extrusion pressure can be reduced by increasing the area ratio of outlet to inlet and changing the direction of material deposition. Moreover, the deformation rate of deposited filament can be minimized by increasing the nozzle aspect ratio and decreasing the direction of material deposition. These findings provide theoretical guidance for the design and selection of nozzles before the printing process.

Effect of Structural Build-Up on Interlayer Bond Strength of 3D Printed Cement Mortars

Tinghong Pan et al.

Summary: Understanding the relationship between material properties and printability, controlling material characteristics through additives, and proposing a new parameter, maximum operational time (MOT), to ensure high interlayer bond strength are essential in digital concrete additive manufacturing. The use of nano clay and TS composite can reduce moisture loss, prevent weak interface layer formation, and enhance interlayer bond strength. This research contributes new insights into designing 3D-printed ink with good extrudability, buildability, and interlayer bond strength.
