Bio-oil production from oleaginous microorganisms using hydrothermal liquefaction: A biorefinery approach

Tanushree Paul et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the thermochemical conversion process of converting biomass into bio-oil, focusing on the advantages and detailed information of oleaginous microorganisms as biomass feedstocks, as well as the use of wastewater as their substrate. The different process parameters affecting the HTL technology are also discussed, along with an integrated HTL-based sustainable biorefinery approach for resource recovery.

Supplementing wastewater with NPK fertilizer as a cheap source of nutrients in cultivating live food (Chlorella vulgaris)

Kulwa Mtaki et al.

Summary: The study investigated the use of aquaculture wastewater supplemented with NPK as a cheap source of nutrient for cultivating Chlorella vulgaris. It was found that growing C. vulgaris in AWW + 1.0 NPK medium resulted in the highest biomass productivity. The microalgae grown in AWW + 1.0 NPK also showed good vitamin and mineral content compared to the expensive BBM medium.

Yevhen Maltsev et al.

Summary: A new species of freshwater plankton, Nephrochlamys yushanlensis sp. nov., was described and found to belong to a new lineage within the genus Nephrochlamys based on morphology, gene sequences, and fatty acid profiles. Experiments demonstrated significant increases in biomass and lipid content under phosphate and nitrate deprivation conditions, suggesting potential for biodiesel production.

Influence of Light Conditions on Microalgae Growth and Content of Lipids, Carotenoids, and Fatty Acid Composition

Yevhen Maltsev et al.

Summary: Microalgae are a valuable natural resource for producing a variety of value-added products. The optimal light intensity for their growth is around 26,400 µmol photons m(-2) s(-1), with higher intensity leading to increased lipid synthesis and triacylglyceride content. Light intensity also affects the synthesis of fatty acids and carotenoids in microalgae biomass. Additionally, combining light with other stresses can enhance the productivity of algae.

Microalgal lipids: A review of lipids potential and quantification for 95 phytoplankton species

Marjorie Morales et al.

Summary: Phytoplankton have the potential for biodiesel production, with higher growth rates and oil yield than terrestrial crops. To enhance lipid yields, stress and cultivation conditions are altered, creating challenges in understanding optimal lipid accumulation factors. Various factors such as nutrient stress, temperature, and metabolic engineering impact lipid content and composition, highlighting the complexity in comparing different phyla for improved phytoplankton-based biodiesel production.
