Effect of pH Buffer and Carbon Metabolism on the Yield and Mechanical Properties of Bacterial Cellulose Produced by Komagataeibacter hansenii ATCC 53582

Zhaofeng Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of pH buffer on the yield of Komagataeibacter hansenii strain ATCC 53582, finding that phosphate and phthalate buffers with low ionic strength can increase BC production, although leading to a significant decrease in pH due to gluconic acid accumulation. However, the addition of gluconic acid enhances the mechanical properties of BC hydrogels and increases its polymer density.

Comparison of Structure and Magnetic Properties of Ni/C Composites Synthesized from Wheat Straw by Different Methods

Ihor Bordun et al.

Summary: Ni/C nanostructured composites were successfully synthesized using wheat straw as a natural raw material. The composites contained metallic nickel, with magnetic measurements indicating nickel was in nanoparticle state. This novel material could potentially be utilized for energy storage applications or as magnetically controlled adsorbents.

Characterization of nanocellulose production by strains of Komagataeibacter sp. isolated from organic waste and Kombucha

Yash Gupte et al.

Summary: Bacterial nanocellulose production from Acetobacter strains isolated from organic waste and fermented tea was studied, with optimal glycerol concentration found to be 1%. The study showed a maximum productivity of 4.5 g/L of bacterial nanocellulose and an average nitrogen and phosphorus consumption rate of 45 mg/L/day each. Physical properties such as crystallinity and fibril dimensions varied based on the carbon source used.

Summary: This study explored the effects of ethanol and lactic acid on bacterial cellulose production and determined the optimal composition of a co-supplemented culture. The optimization resulted in a significant increase in yield and improvements in BNC properties. The findings suggest that the addition of lactic acid or ethanol can enhance BNC growth and modify its properties, providing potential for more cost-effective production and wider application of this biopolymer.
