Summary: This study reviewed the literature on difficulty scoring systems (DSS) for minimally invasive liver resection (MILR) and found that existing DSS are effective in predicting the difficulty of the surgery.

Pure laparoscopic vs open right hepatectomy in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma: A propensity score-matched analysis

Yi-Yeon Nam et al.

Summary: This study compared the short- and long-term outcomes of pure laparoscopic right hepatectomy (PLRH) with those of open right hepatectomy (ORH) in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The results showed that postoperative outcomes, including oncological outcomes, were similar between PLRH and ORH, indicating that PLRH can be a safe and feasible alternative to ORH in patients with HCC.

Effect of laparoscopic liver resection on postoperative delirium in elderly patients with hepatocellular carcinoma

Takeo Nomi et al.

Summary: This retrospective multicenter study evaluated the impact of postoperative delirium after liver resection for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in elderly patients. Smoking history, hypertension, sleeping pill consumption, and open liver resection were identified as risk factors for postoperative delirium. The study found that the rate of other causes of death was significantly higher in the delirium group than in the no-delirium group, while the rate of death due to HCC or liver failure at 1 year was similar between the two groups. The analysis also revealed the potential benefits of laparoscopic liver resection in reducing the rate of postoperative delirium in elderly patients.

Short-term outcomes of laparoscopic versus open liver resection for hepatocellular carcinoma in older patients: a propensity score matching analysis

Kazuteru Monden et al.

Summary: This study compares the safety and feasibility of laparoscopic liver resection (LLR) versus open liver resection (OLR) for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in older patients. The results show that LLR is safe and feasible for selected older patients with HCC, with less blood loss and shorter postoperative hospital stay.

Laparoscopic surgery for colorectal cancer in an elderly population with high comorbidity: a single centre experience

Gerald Drews et al.

Summary: This retrospective study aimed to compare the short and long-term clinical and oncological outcomes of laparoscopic surgery versus traditional surgery in elderly colorectal cancer patients. The results showed that laparoscopic surgery is a feasible treatment option even in elderly patients with high comorbidity. However, for patients with low rectal cancer, especially older patients, laparoscopic surgery may lead to reduced survival rates. Therefore, further evaluation of quality of life and consideration of alternative treatment methods are necessary for these patients.

Surgical results and prognosis of lung cancer in elderly Japanese patients aged over 85 years: comparison with patients aged 80-84 years

Hideomi Ichinokawa et al.

Summary: This study examined the safety, therapeutic results, and prognosis of surgical treatment for lung cancer patients over 85 years of age. In a limited number of patients, surgical resection in patients aged over 85 years was safely performed, and the survival of these patients was comparable to those aged 80-84 years.

Summary: This study found that laparoscopic gastrectomy (LG) for elderly patients aged 80 years and older with gastric cancer had better short-term and long-term outcomes compared to open gastrectomy (OG), including faster recovery, shorter hospital stay, lower complication rate, and slightly higher survival rates without significant differences.
