Viral infection switches the balance between bacterial and eukaryotic recyclers of organic matter during coccolithophore blooms

Flora Vincent et al.

Summary: Algal blooms are important for marine primary production and play a central role in microbial ecology and global elemental cycling. This study investigates the effect of viral infection on the composition of a bloom-associated microbiome and the fate of carbon, and reveals that high levels of viral infection can result in significant shifts in bacterial and eukaryotic assemblages as well as increased carbon sinking into the deep ocean.

Third revision of the global surface seawater dimethyl sulfide climatology (DMS-Rev3)

Shrivardhan Hulswar et al.

Summary: This paper presents an updated estimation of global surface seawater dimethyl sulfide (DMS) climatology with significant improvements in data handling and processing. The results show a decrease in the global annual mean DMS concentration compared to the previous estimation, and large regional differences are observed. The global sea-to-air flux of DMS has also decreased, with the most significant changes occurring in high concentration regions such as the polar oceans.

Viral infection of algal blooms leaves a unique metabolic footprint on the dissolved organic matter in the ocean

Constanze Kuhlisch et al.

Summary: The study found that bloom succession of Emiliania huxleyi induces dynamic changes in the exometabolic landscape, and viral infection induces the release of metabolites containing chlorine and iodine, which are detected in oceanic E. huxleyi blooms as well.

Evaluation of ocean dimethylsulfide concentration and emission in CMIP6 models

Josue Bock et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the characteristics and trends of surface ocean dimethylsulfide concentrations and fluxes into the atmosphere from four Earth system models. The models generally underestimated observed climatology in historical simulations but compared more favorably to recent observation-based datasets. The models showed disagreement on the trend of global DMS flux, with changes in surface DMS concentrations playing a dominant role in driving these trends.
