Control of the Nanopore Architecture of Anodic Alumina via Stepwise Anodization with Voltage Modulation and Pore Widening

Chanyoung Jeong et al.

Summary: The morphology and hierarchy of nanopore structures in anodic alumina are controlled by stepwise anodizing processes involving mild anodization, hard anodization, and intermediate pore-widening steps. By varying the anodizing sequence and the duration of the intermediate step, unique three-dimensional morphology and hierarchy of the nanopore structures beyond the conventional cylindrical pore geometry are achieved. This stepwise anodizing process allows for the design and fabrication of various types of nanopore structures, expanding the applications of nanoporous anodic alumina.

Structural Engineering of the Barrier Oxide Layer of Nanoporous Anodic Alumina for Iontronic Sensing

Juan Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a hemispherical barrier oxide layer (BOL) was engineered in structured nanoporous anodic alumina (NAA) membranes. These membranes exhibited characteristic ionic current rectification (ICR) signals, which could be controlled by the thickness and chemical composition of the BOL, as well as the pH of the electrolyte solution. The inner surface of the nanochannels was modified for selective detection of gold metal ions (Au3+). The sensitivity of the detection system was found to be proportional to the thickness of the barrier oxide layer, with the highest sensitivity achieved in membranes with a BOL thickness of 232 +/- 6 nm.

Real-time detection of per-fluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) self-assembled monolayers in nanoporous interferometers

Cheryl Suwen Law et al.

Summary: This study presents an optical system for real-time, label-free detection of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs). By analyzing key sensing parameters, the researchers determined the optimal molecular length for maximizing sensitivity and selectivity to PFAS. The study also provides insights into the formation mechanism of PFAS self-assembled monolayers, and demonstrates the potential real-life applicability of the system.

Design and performance analysis of smart photonic sensors for industrial applications

S. Poonguzhali et al.

Summary: This article proposes a toxic gas sensor based on a two-dimensional photonic crystal, which can effectively detect and prevent accidents caused by hazardous gases. The design of the sensor utilizes hexagonal and square crystal lattice structures to manipulate light for gas detection. Evaluation of the spectral properties of different toxic gases reveals that the sensor has high quality factor, sensitivity, and transmitted output power, with low detection limit. Therefore, this nanosensor is of great importance in industrial safety, healthcare, aerospace, agriculture, transportation, environmental monitoring, thermal plants, and mines.
