Increase in temperature increases ingestion and toxicity of polyamide microplastics in Nile tilapia

Jabed Hasan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of different temperatures on the ingestion of microplastics (MP) and the physiological consequences in Nile tilapia exposed to virgin polyamide (PA). The study found that fish exposed to a temperature of 36 degrees C ingested the highest amount of PA. Additionally, the study showed that global warming and MP exposure affected hemoglobin levels, red and white blood cell counts, glucose levels, and resulted in various abnormalities in fish. The accumulation of PA also caused damage to the gills and intestine of the fish, with severity increasing with temperature.

The Relationship between Lifespan of Marine Bivalves and Their Fatty Acids of Mitochondria Lipids

Aleksandra Anatolyevna Istomina et al.

Summary: The fatty acid composition of mitochondrial membranes is related to the lifespan of marine bivalves. The lipid composition of mitochondria affects the sensitivity of the membranes to oxidative damage, which is associated with the maximum lifespan of the species.

Single and combined toxicity assessment of primary or UV-aged microplastics and adsorbed organic pollutants on microalga Chlorella pyrenoidosa

Wei Song et al.

Summary: In this study, the single and combined toxicity of microplastics (MPs) and organic pollutants on Chlorella pyrenoidosa were investigated. The results showed that the combined impact of UV-aged MPs and organic pollutants had a significant damaging effect on algae cells. This research verified the remarkable combined toxicity between UV-aged MPs and organic pollutants on microalgae.

Combined exposure to microplastics and amitriptyline caused intestinal damage, oxidative stress and gut microbiota dysbiosis in zebrafish (Danio rerio)

Yanhong Shi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the combined effects of microplastics and commonly used antidepressants on the intestinal tissue and gut microbiota of zebrafish. The results show that exposure to the combination of microplastics and antidepressants leads to severe gut injuries, dysbiosis in the gut microbiota, and inflammation. These findings are important for assessing the combined effects of microplastics and tricyclic antidepressants on the health of aquatic organisms.

Impact of microfiber pollution on aquatic biota: A critical analysis of effects and preventive measures

K. K. Priya et al.

Summary: The widespread use of personal protective equipments (PPEs) during the COVID-19 pandemic has led to the pollution of aquatic ecosystems with microplastics/microfibres (MPs/MFs) from mismanaged plastic wastes and improper disposal of surgical face masks. These MPs/MFs, along with other contaminants, pose a threat to organisms and ecosystems by disrupting the food chain and causing chronic health problems. This review article aims to provide the latest information on the deterioration of surgical face masks in the environment, explore exposure models and biomarkers of exposure, identify research gaps, and raise awareness on proper disposal of used masks and PPEs.

Toxic effects of microplastic (polyethylene) exposure: Bioaccumulation, hematological parameters and antioxidant responses in crucian carp, Carassius carassius

Young-Bin Yu et al.

Summary: The aim of this study is to assess the toxic effects of polyethylene microplastics (PE-MPs) on crucian carp by examining bioaccumulation, hematological parameters, and antioxidant responses. Results showed that the accumulation of PE-MPs in different tissues of crucian carp increased with the concentration, with the highest accumulation in the intestine, followed by the gills and liver. Hematological parameters, plasma components, and antioxidant responses were significantly affected by PE-MPs in a concentration-dependent manner. Exposure to >= 32 mg/L of PE-MPs resulted in a significant decrease in red blood cells, hemoglobin content, and hematocrit values. Additionally, exposure to >= 32 mg/L of PE-MPs induced oxidative stress in the liver, gills, and intestine, leading to elevated levels of superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione S-transferase, and decreased glutathione levels. The interaction between PE-MPs and exposure periods did not produce significant changes.

Microplastics in Freshwater Ecosystems of India: Current Trends and Future Perspectives

Kannaiyan Neelavannan et al.

Summary: Microplastics contamination in freshwater ecosystems of India is a growing concern. Compared to marine ecosystems, the source, transport, and fate of microplastics in Indian freshwater ecosystems are still underexplored. Furthermore, there is no standard procedure for separating microplastics from water and sediment samples, and the impact of microplastics on freshwater ecosystem services is still limited.

Analysis of Microplastics in Human Feces Reveals a Correlation between Fecal Microplastics and Inflammatory Bowel Disease Status

Zehua Yan et al.

Summary: The study found that the concentration of fecal microplastics in patients with inflammatory bowel disease was significantly higher than in healthy individuals, with poly(ethylene terephthalate) and polyamide being the main components in the feces. A positive correlation between fecal microplastics concentration and the severity of IBD was also observed. Plastic packaging of drinking water and food, as well as dust exposure, were identified as important sources of human exposure to microplastics.

Discovery and quantification of plastic particle pollution in human blood

Heather A. Leslie et al.

Summary: Plastic particles are widespread pollutants in the environment and food chain, and this study successfully developed a method to measure the presence of plastic particles in human blood. The study found four high production volume polymers in blood samples and demonstrated that plastic particles can be taken up by the human bloodstream.
