Correlation of plasma generated long-lived reactive species in aqueous and gas phases with different feeding gases

Kexin Zhang et al.

Summary: Reactive species generated during plasma applications were investigated in both aqueous and gas phases using two types of plasma jets with different feeding gases. Optical absorption spectroscopy and wet chemical-based colorimetric methods were applied to determine the reactive species in ambient air and plasma-activated water respectively. Partial least squares regression modelling and selectivity ratio algorithm were used to analyze the correlations and select important spectral wavelengths for these reactive species.

Effects of duty ratio on liquid- and polymer-surface treatment by a unipolar microsecond-pulsed helium atmospheric-pressure plasma jet

Jin Hee Bae et al.

Summary: The effects of duty ratio of a unipolar microsecond-pulsed helium atmospheric-pressure plasma jet (APPJ) on liquid- and polymer-surface treatments were analyzed. By varying operating parameters such as applied voltage and additive flow, changes in plasma plume length, gas temperature, excitation temperature, discharge current, absorption power, and optical emission spectra were observed. The experiments included exposure of de-ionized water to the APPJ and investigating the effect of plasma treatment on polymeric surfaces using polycarbonate, polypropylene, and polymethylmethacrylate as substrates. The findings showed increased surface energy and changed wetting characteristics due to the introduction of polar groups.

Plasma activated medium prepared by a bipolar microsecond-pulsed atmospheric pressure plasma jet array induces mitochondria-mediated apoptosis in human cervical cancer cells

Ara Jo et al.

Summary: This study prepared plasma activated medium (PAM) using a bipolar microsecond-pulsed atmospheric pressure plasma jet (APPJ) array source and applied it for cancer cell treatment. The results showed that PAM-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) can regulate protein expression associated with mitochondria, leading to apoptosis in human cervical cancer cells through the Cyto C/JNK/p38 signaling pathway.

Cold atmospheric-pressure air plasma jet: Physics and opportunities

XinPei Lu et al.

Summary: Cold atmospheric-pressure plasma jet generates reactive species like reactive oxygen and nitrogen at or close to room temperature, making it attractive for applications such as plasma medicine. Despite challenges in maintaining gas temperature near room temperature under one atmospheric pressure, several CAAP-Js have been reported after decades of research. The development and physics of CAAP-Js, including their dynamics and nonequilibrium characteristics, have been discussed in this review.
