Effect of fluorine doping on the optical and mechanical properties of bismuth-containing silicate and borate glasses

Katsuki Hayashi et al.

Summary: The effect of fluorine doping on the optical bandgap and Young's modulus of binary Bi2O3-SiO2 and Bi2O3-B2O3 glasses is investigated. Fluorine doping causes blueshifts in the optical bandgaps and maintains small photoelastic constants and large Young's moduli.

Colorless SnO- and Sb2O3-containing borate and borosilicate glasses with small photoelastic and high refractive properties

Kazuki Mitsui et al.

Summary: The relationship between optical properties and structures of 5s(2)-type cations such as Sn2+- and Sb3+-containing borate and borosilicate glass was examined. It was found that a weak ligand field around a Sn2+ close to tetrahedral borate unit could lead to a blueshift of optical bandgap, keeping small photoelastic constant and high refractive index.

Origins of the coloration from structure and valence state of bismuth oxide glasses

Akira Saitoh et al.

Summary: The origins of coloration in Bi2O3-SiO2, Bi2O3-B2O3, and Bi2O3-P2O5 glasses were investigated, correlating the electronic structure with Bi valence states. The glasses exhibited optical bandgaps and visible absorption bands related to charge transfer between Bi3+ and Bi5+, or plasmonic Bi-0 clusters. These Bi oxide glasses with high transparency and refractive index show potential as replacements for toxic Pb-containing optical glasses.

Short-range structure, the role of bismuth and property-structure correlations in bismuth borate glasses

C. P. E. Varsamis et al.

Summary: Bismuth-containing borate glasses in a wide composition range were studied using infrared reflectance spectra, revealing the presence of different borate units and their proportions in various composition ranges. The study also calculated various structural properties and their relation to the glass transition temperature.
