Imaging in retinal vascular disease: A review

Nathanael U. Haener et al.

Summary: Retinal vascular diseases are a wide range of eye pathologies. Retinal imaging is essential for diagnosing, predicting, and monitoring retinal vascular diseases. It includes various imaging techniques such as color fundus photography, optical coherence tomography, fluorescein angiography, and optical coherence tomography angiography. Recent advancements in imaging techniques, like widefield imaging, have enabled the assessment of the retinal periphery, which is crucial for retinal vascular diseases. Automatic image analysis and artificial intelligence can assist in image analysis and have potential for prognostic purposes.

Retinal electrophysiology in central nervous system disorders. A review of human and mouse studies

Paul A. A. Constable et al.

Summary: The retina and brain have similar neurochemistry and neurodevelopmental origins. Retinal findings are being used as potential biomarkers for central nervous system disorders. Despite limitations, functional retinal biomarkers show promise in neurological disorders. This review summarizes functional retinal findings, retinal neurotransmitters, and electrophysiological tests, and suggests that future applications of signal analysis and machine learning algorithms could provide new insights into the pathophysiology and classification of various clinical disorders.

Correlation Between Optical Coherence Tomography and Photopic Negative Response of Flash Electroretinography in Ganglion Cell Complex Assessment in Glaucoma Patients

Mohammad Hasan Awwad et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between the photopic negative response (PhNR) of the light-adapted flash electroretinography (ERG) and measurements of standard automated perimetry (SAP) and optical coherence tomography (OCT) in assessing the affection of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) in glaucoma. The results showed that PhNR correlated significantly with SAP and OCT parameters, suggesting that PhNR could be a valuable supplementary tool for objectively assessing the function of RGCs in glaucoma.

The use of optical coherence tomography in neurology: a review

Jim Xie et al.

Summary: The article introduces the principles and applications of optical coherence tomography (OCT), particularly in the diagnosis and monitoring of neurological disorders. Measurements of the peripapillary retinal nerve fibre layer and macular ganglion cell complex are crucial for diagnosing and monitoring neurological diseases.

Topical nerve growth factor prevents neurodegenerative and vascular stages of diabetic retinopathy

Gianpaolo Zerbini et al.

Summary: This study aims to prevent diabetic retinopathy (DR) by using topical nerve growth factor (NGF). The results show that providing early neuroprotective approach can successfully prevent retinal neurodegeneration and subsequent vascular dysfunction.

Nerve Growth Factor Biodelivery: A Limiting Step in Moving Toward Extensive Clinical Application?

Giuseppe Alastra et al.

Summary: Nerve growth factor (NGF) exerts powerful biological effects on the CNS and other peripheral tissues, but its clinical application is hindered by unexpected side effects and challenges in defining appropriate dosing and administration strategies. Further research is needed to clarify the impediments to the clinical application of this powerful molecule.

Topical delivery of nerve growth factor for treatment of ocular and brain disorders

Gemma Eftimiadi et al.

Summary: Neurotrophins, particularly nerve growth factor, have shown therapeutic potential for ocular and brain diseases. Local delivery of nerve growth factor through topical ocular and intranasal administration is safe and effective, offering an alternative to systemic and invasive intracerebral administration. Promising results have been observed in various ophthalmic diseases and brain disorders, with ongoing clinical trials showing encouraging findings, especially in pediatric patients.
