MOFs with Open Metal(III) Sites for the Environmental Capture of Polar Volatile Organic Compounds

Maria Ines Severino et al.

Summary: Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) with open metal sites (OMS) can strongly interact with polar gases/vapors. However, their selective adsorption is usually hindered by a high affinity to water under ambient conditions. This study challenges the paradigm by demonstrating that metal(III) polycarboxylates MOFs, such as MIL-100(Fe), with a high concentration of OMS, enable the selective capture of polar VOCs even in the presence of water. The adsorption mechanism involves a direct coordination of the VOC on the OMS, which has a stronger interaction energy compared to water.

Jieying Hu et al.

Summary: The cruciform linker molecule identified in this study features two designer functions: pyrazole donors for framework construction and vicinal alkynyl units for benzannulation to form nanographene units. The crystalline Ni-8-pyrazolate scaffold retains crystalline order even after thermal treatments, partially graphitizing neighboring alkyne units. This results in enhanced electroactive properties of the porous hosts, achieving hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity comparable to nickel/palladium-enabled materials.
