Resistance assessment and enzymatic responses of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L) against Rhizoctonia solani damping-off in response to seed presoaking in Vitex agnus-castus L. oils and foliar spray with zinc oxide nanoparticles

M. A. Abu-Tahon et al.

Summary: A study was conducted to find an alternative to synthetic fungicides for controlling Rhizoctonia solani damping off in common bean. The combination of seed presoaking in Vitex agnus-castus essential oils and foliar spray with ZnO NPs was found to be more effective in reducing disease incidence and enhancing seed germination percentage, compared to individual treatments. Additionally, plants treated with the combination showed higher levels of enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants, as well as mineral composition, compared to untreated infected plants.

Unraveling the polypharmacology of a natural antifungal product, eugenol, against Rhizoctonia solani

Yongtian Zhao et al.

Summary: Eugenol, a main component of Syzygium aromaticum, exhibits antifungal properties by causing morphological changes in Rhizoctonia solani mycelia, downregulating expression of C-4 methyl sterol oxidase, inhibiting ergosterol synthesis, increasing membrane permeability, impairing transportation of amino acids and glucose, as well as affecting oxidative phosphorylation and the tricarboxylic acid cycle. Additionally, eugenol induces oxidative stress by decreasing mitochondrial membrane potential, increasing reactive oxygen species, and malondialdehyde levels, ultimately contributing to its antifungal activity against R. solani.

Xiao-Fei Shang et al.

Summary: Through proteomics and transcriptomics analysis, this study investigated the potential mode of action of neocryptolepine against Rhizoctonia solani. Results showed that neocryptolepine affected mitochondrial respiratory chain, leading to changes in oxidative phosphorylation and inhibition of complex III activity. The study identified a potential target, cytochrome b-c1 complex subunit Rieske, and demonstrated neocryptolepine's antifungal efficacy and ability to inhibit sclerotia formation in a concentration-dependent manner.
