Larval dispersal patterns and connectivity of Acropora on Florida's Coral Reef and its implications for restoration

Samantha King et al.

Summary: Since the 1980s, the populations of Acropora cervicornis and A. palmata have declined significantly due to disease and human activities. This study used larval survival and competency data to model the dispersal patterns of these coral species along Florida's Coral Reef. The results indicate that selective spatial restoration can stimulate natural recovery, and the model can be used to guide the management and restoration of genotypically diverse Acropora populations.

Global warming decreases connectivity among coral populations

Joana Figueiredo et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that a 2-degree Celsius warming will reduce the dispersal distance of coral larvae and connectivity between reefs, impacting coral reef recovery and the spread of warm-adapted genes.

Differences in genetic diversity and divergence between brooding and broadcast spawning corals across two spatial scales in the Coral Triangle region

Rosa Maria van der Ven et al.

Summary: The study suggests significant differences in genetic diversity, population structure, and connectivity patterns of tropical corals in Indonesia, with distinct genetic divergence between brooding and broadcast spawning corals. Contemporary dispersal barriers within the Spermonde Archipelago highlight the importance of considering connectivity data in future conservation efforts.

An Indo-Pacific coral spawning database

Andrew H. Baird et al.

Summary: The discovery of multi-species synchronous spawning on the Great Barrier Reef in the 1980s led to efforts to document spawning times globally. The Coral Spawning Database (CSD) compiles data from over 100 sites in the Indo-Pacific region to provide open access for studying coral reproductive biology. The CSD aims to accelerate understanding of coral reproduction and to establish a baseline for evaluating future changes in reproductive patterns.
