Changes in Nicotine Dependence Among Smokers Using Electronic Cigarettes to Reduce Cigarette Smoking in a Randomized Controlled Trial

Jessica Yingst et al.

Summary: This study found that using electronic cigarettes can reduce cigarette dependence without significantly increasing total nicotine exposure. It also found that using electronic cigarettes can reduce cigarette dependence and increase electronic cigarette dependence (only in the condition with the highest nicotine concentration), but there was no long-term increase in total nicotine dependence or nicotine exposure.

Behavioral Economic Assessment of Abuse Liability for Black & Mild Cigar Flavors Among Young Adults

Rose S. Bono et al.

Summary: This study examines the abuse liability of different flavored cigars among young adult cigarette smokers. The findings show that all cigar flavors are associated with lower abuse liability compared to own-brand cigarettes, and can function as substitutes for cigarettes. However, abuse liability varies by cigar flavor, with original and cream-flavored cigars appearing to have the highest abuse liability. This highlights the importance of regulating flavors and flavor additives in cigars.

The Interaction of Nicotine Concentration and Device Power on Electronic Nicotine Delivery System (ENDS) Abuse Liability Among Exclusive ENDS Users and Dual Users of ENDS and Combustible Cigarettes

Cosima Hoetger et al.

Summary: The study suggests that limiting liquid nicotine concentration in electronic nicotine delivery systems without regulating device power may not effectively reduce abuse liability, as users may increase device power to compensate for low nicotine concentration.

Beyond Systematic and Unsystematic Responding: Latent Class Mixture Models to Characterize Response Patterns in Discounting Research

Shawn P. Gilroy et al.

Summary: Operant behavioral economic methods are widely used in research, and it is important to develop efficient methods for large-scale research and data analysis. This review explores existing approaches for characterizing discounting and introduces a novel data-driven approach based on Latent Class Analysis. The new approach aims to classify responders into distinct groups based on their choice patterns, which can supplement existing methods and improve the accuracy of analyzing discounting data.

Tobacco-Use Behavior and Toxicant Exposure Among Current Dual Users of Electronic Cigarettes and Tobacco Cigarettes

Caroline O. Cobb et al.

Summary: This study showed that exclusive use of e-cigarettes reduced carbon monoxide and nicotine exposure compared to exclusive cigarette use. However, among dual users, using e-cigarettes along with cigarettes did not reduce cigarette consumption or toxicant exposure.
