Spatial and risk factor analyses of vector-borne pathogens among shelter dogs in the Eastern United States

Corinna M. Hazelrig et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the geographical distribution, risk factors, and co-infections associated with vector-borne pathogens in shelter dogs in the Eastern United States. The results showed regional variations in the prevalence of different pathogens, with the Southeast having the highest prevalence of Dirofilaria immitis and Ehrlichia spp., and the Northeast having the highest prevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi and Anaplasma spp. Location and breed group were significant risk factors for infection.

Surveys for ticks on wildlife hosts and in the environment at Asian longhorned tick (Haemaphysalis longicornis)-positive sites in Virginia and New Jersey, 2018

Seth A. White et al.

Summary: This study identified the wildlife host range of Asian longhorned ticks (ALT) in the US, with 51 infested individuals from seven different species found in two states. ALT was also detected in the environment in both states, along with three native tick species known to carry pathogens of public health and veterinary importance.

A multi-seasonal study investigating the phenology, host and habitat associations, and pathogens of Haemaphysalis longicornis in Virginia, USA

Alec T. Thompson et al.

Summary: The study on the phenology of Haemaphysalis longicornis in Virginia revealed seasonal differences in tick activity compared to previous studies in the northeastern United States. The presence of this exotic tick was found to be lower in field habitats and during the summer months, and it was detected on several wildlife hosts. Additionally, tick-borne pathogens were analyzed, including the detection of arthropod-borne pathogens native to the United States in host-seeking H. longicornis.
