Strength-dilatancy and critical state behaviours of binary mixtures of graded sands influenced by particle size ratio and fines content

Yuksel Yilmaz et al.

Summary: In this study, a series of drained triaxial compression tests were conducted on dense binary silica sand mixtures with different particle size ratios to investigate the effects of fines content and particle size ratio on drained shear behavior. The results showed that fines content and particle size ratio significantly influenced stress-strain response, critical state void ratio, critical state friction angle, maximum dilation angle, peak friction angle, and stress-dilatancy relation.

Effects of temperature on the time-dependent compression and shear behaviour of a soft marine clayey soil br

Ze-Jian Chen et al.

Summary: The effects of temperature on the stress-strain behavior of Hong Kong marine deposits (HKMD) were studied. It was found that with increasing temperature, the creep coefficient decreased and the creep strain rate increased. The undrained shear strength of HKMD was not significantly affected by temperature under constant temperature, but significant reduction of effective stress and rise of porewater pressure were observed in triaxial tests with step-changed temperature. Microscopic investigations revealed that the microstructure of HKMD changed with temperature.

Thermal Effects on Shear Characteristics of Unbound Granular Materials under Drained Conditions

Zhigang Cao et al.

Summary: In this study, the thermal-induced changes in the shear characteristics of unbound granular materials (UGMs) were investigated. The thermal dependence of various strength parameters was examined under different temperatures, initial mean effective stresses, and relative compaction levels. The results showed that dense UGMs exhibited expansion during heating and slight contraction during cooling, with the thermal deformation attributed to the movement and rotation of soil particles.

Breakage-Dependent Fractional Plasticity Model for Sands

Yang Xiao et al.

Summary: Particle breakage has a significant impact on the mechanical behavior of crushable sands, including shear strength, volumetric deformation, stress-dilatancy relationship, and plastic-flow rule. This paper proposes a breakage-dependent fractional-plasticity (BDFP) model to capture the stress-strain relationship of crushable sands, incorporating a general plastic-flow rule and breakage-dependent void-ratio-pressure state parameter. The BDFP model accurately predicts the strength and deformation of crushable sands, especially under higher confining pressures.

Morphology and fines type effect on packing of binary soils

Yang Xiao et al.

Summary: Three sands with different particle shapes were mixed with non-plastic fines and plastic fines (clay) in various fines content. The results showed that both the particle shape of the host material and the plasticity of fines can affect the threshold fines content. The linear equation derived from the test data can evaluate the variation of void ratios with increasing fines content, but some limitations exist.

Effect of particle size on small strain stiffness of biotreated sands

Yang Xiao et al.

Summary: Particle size plays a critical role in the engineering behavior of sand, but there is limited research on the effects of particle size on small strain stiffness in biocemented sand. This study found that particle size is the main characteristic that affects the change in small strain shear modulus Gmax. Tests were conducted to investigate Gmax and Gmax anisotropy in biocemented sand using isotropic consolidation tests with shear wave velocity measurement. The results showed that for uncemented sands, Gmax increases with increasing particle size. However, for biocemented sand, biocementation is more effective for smaller grain sizes. In coarse sand, biocementation can inhibit the stiffness increase caused by stress and, at higher stress levels, the Gmax of uncemented sand can even be higher than that of biocemented sand. Particle size does not have an impact on the small strain stiffness anisotropy of uncemented and biocemented sand for rounded glass beads.

Effect of Active Plastic Fine Fraction on Undrained Behavior of Binary Granular Mixtures

Stefania Gobbi et al.

Summary: The mechanical behavior of fine-sand mixtures is influenced by factors such as initial packing density, stress level, fine content, particle size distribution, mineralogy, and shape. This research investigates the effects of fine particle fraction through various features and proposes the concept of equivalent intergranular void ratio. The experimental results show that particle interactions, packing density, particle size, and plasticity strongly affect the undrained response. The active fine fraction contributes to the sand skeleton structure and influences the equivalent intergranular void ratio.

Influence of plastic fines content on the liquefaction susceptibility of sands: monotonic loading

Meisam Goudarzy et al.

Summary: The study found that an increase in plastic fines content leads to a more contractive response and lower values of mobilized deviatoric stress in sand-fines mixtures. Different types of plastic fines have varying effects on the liquefaction susceptibility of the mixtures under monotonic loading. In e-p' space, mixtures with kaolin showed a higher likelihood of flow liquefaction compared to those with calcigel.

Effects of Temperature and Thermal Cycles on the Elastic Shear Modulus of Saturated Clay

Obed Takyi Bentil et al.

Summary: The thermomechanical behavior of soils, especially in emerging geotechnical applications like energy piles, has been a topic of great interest. While the thermoplasticity is well understood, the study of thermoelasticity has been limited. This research utilized a temperature-controlled oedometer to investigate the effects of temperature and thermal cycles on the elastic shear modulus of saturated clay. The results showed that at a given stress, the elastic shear modulus decreased at higher temperatures, and thermal cycles led to an increase in the modulus due to soil densification and particle rearrangement.

Effect and mechanism of fines content on the shear strength of calcareous sand

Jianhua Shen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of fines content on the shear strength of calcareous sand in the hydraulically reclaimed foundation of island-reefs in the South China Sea. The research reveals that an increase in fines content leads to a gradual decrease in peak strength, weakening of strain-softening characteristics, less dilation, and a linear decrease in apparent cohesion for calcareous sand. The results provide important insights for slope stability analysis and foundation treatment of island reefs.

Effect of monotonic and cyclic temperature variations on the mechanical behavior of a compacted soil

Mojdeh Lahoori et al.

Summary: The study found that the effect of heating and cooling on mechanical properties is more pronounced under vertical stresses higher than the preconsolidation pressure, while compression and swelling indexes may be independent of temperature variation. Temperature cycles can lead to stress history-dependent volumetric response of compacted soil in oedometric and shear tests.
