Diurnal cycles of cloud cover and its vertical distribution over the Tibetan Plateau revealed by satellite observations, reanalysis datasets, and CMIP6 outputs

Yuxin Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the diurnal variations in cloud cover and cloud vertical distribution over the Tibetan Plateau. The results show that total cloud cover peaks in the morning and varies spatially and temporally. The study also reveals the dominant presence of opaque cirrus clouds over the plateau, which exhibit significant diurnal variations.

Spatial and temporal patterns of planetary boundary layer height during 1979-2018 over the Tibetan Plateau using ERA5

Nils Slaettberg et al.

Summary: This study presents a multi-decadal climatology of Planetary Boundary Layer Height (PBLH) over the Tibetan Plateau using high-resolution reanalysis data (ERA5). The research shows that PBLH varies in different seasons and regions, and is correlated with factors such as NAO and Indian summer monsoon. The diurnal cycles of PBLH on the Tibetan Plateau are generally affected by insolation, reaching their peaks in the afternoon.

How do aerosols above the residual layer affect the planetary boundary layer height?

Yongjing Ma et al.

Summary: The study reveals that absorption aerosols and scattering aerosols have different effects on the development of the planetary boundary layer (PBL). Absorption aerosols can promote the development of PBL and heat the morning residual layer (MRL), while scattering aerosols exhibit a similar suppression effect on PBL regardless of their vertical location. However, the role of different types of aerosols in the upper atmosphere needs further exploration.

Aerosol Detection from the Cloud-Aerosol Transport System on the International Space Station: Algorithm Overview and Implications for Diurnal Sampling

Edward P. Nowottnick et al.

Summary: The concentration and vertical distribution of particulate aerosols in the atmosphere have significant influence on their interaction with the Earth system and air quality. Utilizing space-based lidar technology, the Cloud-Aerosol Transport System (CATS) can accurately determine the vertical structure and diurnal cycle of these aerosols. By implementing aerosol-typing algorithms, CATS assigns different types and extinction-to-backscatter ratios to vertical layers of aerosols. With improved algorithms, CATS demonstrated comparable results to CALIOP lidar and MERRA-2 model reanalysis, capturing the seasonal cycle of aerosols. Leveraging the unique orbit of the International Space Station, CATS also successfully resolved the diurnal cycle of aerosol altitude in the Maritime Continent of Southeast Asia as observed by ground-based instruments.

Comparison of planetary boundary layer height from ceilometer with ARM radiosonde data

Damao Zhang et al.

Summary: Ceilometer measurements of aerosol backscatter profiles have been widely used for continuous estimation of planetary boundary layer height (PBLHT). This study investigates the robustness of ceilometer-estimated PBLHT under different atmospheric conditions. Comparisons are made between ceilometer- and radiosonde-estimated PBLHTs at different ARM observatories, covering various atmospheric conditions. The comparisons show good agreement under unstable conditions at land observatories, but challenges remain for reliable PBLHT estimations over ocean surfaces. Ceilometer-estimated PBLHT compares better with different estimation methods under different stable and unstable conditions.

Methodology to determine the coupling of continental clouds with surface and boundary layer height under cloudy conditions from lidar and meteorological data

Tianning Su et al.

Summary: The study extends the concept of coupling between clouds and surface or boundary layer to continental low clouds and presents a new method based on potential temperature profiles to identify the coupling and decoupling states of land low clouds. By using lidar measurements and surface meteorological instruments, the study develops a method to determine the coupled states of cloudy conditions during the daytime and successfully retrieves the planetary boundary layer height under cloudy conditions. The new method provides an advanced tool to separately investigate coupled and decoupled clouds in climate systems.

Northeastward propagation of nocturnal precipitation over the Sichuan Basin

Juan Li et al.

Summary: The study found a prominent northeastward timing delay of precipitation peak over the Sichuan Basin during the warm season, partly due to the northeastward propagation of precipitation. Precipitation first appears on the southwestern edge of the basin, then propagates northeastward under the influence of large-scale atmospheric circulation, reaching the northeastern part. The southwestern part experiences strong easterly wind deviations and equivalent potential temperature differences in the early evening, favoring precipitation initiation.

Long-Term Trend Comparison of Planetary Boundary Layer Height in Observations and CMIP6 Models over China

Man Yue et al.

Summary: The study found that the long-term trend shift of PBLH in China is related to changes in surface upward sensible heat flux, low cloud cover, and soil moisture. These factors directly influence the energy balance, highlighting the importance of considering them in climate models for accurate PBLH simulations.

Impacts of the Westerlies on Planetary Boundary Layer Growth Over a Valley on the North Side of the Central Himalayas

Yue Lai et al.

Summary: The study focused on the growth of the planetary boundary layer (PBL) in the Rongbuk Valley under the influence of the westerlies. Results showed that valley winds and PBL growth were strongly influenced by variations in the westerlies, with different synoptic conditions leading to deep or shallow PBL development. This highlights the critical role of topography and synoptic circulation in PBL growth.

Rising Planetary Boundary Layer Height over the Sahara Desert and Arabian Peninsula in a Warming Climate

Liming Zhou et al.

Summary: Turbulent mixing in the planetary boundary layer plays a critical role in the vertical exchange of heat, moisture, momentum, trace gases, and aerosols. This study examines the spatial patterns of long-term PBLH trends over land and finds consensus on increasing PBLH over the Sahara Desert and Arabian Peninsula and declining PBLH in India. The changes in PBLH are significantly correlated with changes in surface heating and moisture at the global scale.

Long-term variation of boundary layer height and possible contribution factors: A global analysis

Yarong Li et al.

Summary: This study used long-term radiosonde data to investigate the climatology of global boundary layer height (BLH) and its long-term variations, revealing significant day-night differences in BLH influenced by clouds and land types, as well as the profound impact of near-surface meteorological parameters on BLH trends over time. Contributions from 10 m wind speed (WS) and low tropospheric stability (LTS) were found to be significant in affecting long-term BLH variation, with LTS dominating the increased BLH anomalies. Temperature (T) and relative humidity (RH) also played important roles, while decreasing trends in wind speed contributed significantly to decreased BLH anomalies.

Assessing CALIOP-Derived Planetary Boundary Layer Height Using Ground-Based Lidar

Man-Hae Kim et al.

Summary: Coincident profiles from space-borne and ground-based lidar provide a unique opportunity to estimate planetary boundary layer height. Differences between PBLH derived from CALIOP and SNU lidar are influenced by signal-to-noise ratio and aerosol optical depth, with CALIOP typically showing higher PBLH. Improved agreement is seen after eliminating multilayer cases, indicating reliable PBL detection using CALIOP for daytime. Further investigations are needed for nighttime PBLHs to better understand differences in frequency distribution compared to sounding data.
