A review on management practices, environmental impacts, and human exposure risks related to electrical and electronic waste in Vietnam: findings from case studies in informal e-waste recycling areas

Anh Quoc Hoang et al.

Summary: This review paper comprehensively discusses the management and research aspects of e-waste in an Asian developing country. The lack of effective management and recycling systems in Vietnam has resulted in localized contamination and human exposure to toxic chemicals. Primitive processing activities have been identified as significant contributors to environmental emissions and human exposure to toxic elements and pollutants. Informal e-waste processing releases pollutants at similar levels as large-scale facilities in developed countries.

Environmental and Health Consequences of E-Waste Dumping and Recycling Carried out by Selected Countries in Asia and Latin America

Lynda Andeobu et al.

Summary: The global volume of e-waste is increasing rapidly due to technological innovation and obsolescence of electrical and electronic equipment. However, the environmental and health consequences of e-waste, particularly through informal recycling, have been poorly studied. This study examines the environmental and health impacts of e-waste dumping and informal recycling in selected countries and provides practical suggestions for addressing these issues.

What gets measured gets managed - does it? Uncovering the waste electrical and electronic equipment flows in the European Union

Hina Habib et al.

Summary: This study develops a quantitative model to describe the flows of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) in European Union (EU) Member States, Great Britain, Norway, and Switzerland in 2018. The results show that a significant amount of WEEE was not properly collected and recycled, highlighting the need for improved waste management targets.

Material governance and circularity policies: How waste policies and innovation affect household appliances? accumulation

Matteo Mazzarano

Summary: This paper investigates the macro-economic drivers of accumulation and recycling of electrical and electronic equipment (EEE), a class of durable goods. The study develops a theoretical model and empirical estimations to understand the optimal dynamic of accumulation, innovation, and recycling. The results show that waste policies are strongly correlated with an increase in EEE material accumulation, and socio-economic variables have a significant impact on the study's findings. Additionally, the increase in average durability is positively correlated to material accumulation.

The dynamic effect of eco-innovation and environmental taxes on carbon neutrality target in emerging seven (E7) economies

Ran Tao et al.

Summary: In the wake of the Paris Climate Conference, emerging countries have begun to achieve carbon neutrality targets, underscoring the vital importance of environmental sustainability. Through focusing on factors like eco-innovation and environmental taxes, governments and policymakers can effectively reduce net carbon emissions and address the negative impacts of carbon emissions on environmental quality. This study examines the dynamic impact of eco-innovation and environmental taxes on carbon neutrality targets in emerging economies, highlighting their significant role in carbon abatement and the presence of the Environmental Kuznet Curve.

An assessment of e-waste generation and environmental management of selected countries in Africa, Europe and North America: A systematic review

Lynda Andeobu et al.

Summary: E-waste, generated from electrical and electronic equipment, is a persistent global environmental problem. Many countries are not effectively managing e-waste, highlighting the need for smarter and more sustainable approaches. This study critically reviews e-waste management practices in selected countries and proposes directions for improvement.

Relationship between economic growth and mismanaged e-waste: Panel data evidence from 27 EU countries analyzed under the Kuznets curve hypothesis

Bilal Boubellouta et al.

Summary: This study found an inverted U-shaped relationship between economic growth and mismanaged e-waste, as postulated by the environmental Kuznets curve hypothesis. There is a unidirectional causality relationship running from economic growth to uncollected and non-recycled/non-reused e-waste. Additionally, mismanaged e-waste increases with higher credit to the private sector.

Impacts of Environmental Policies on Global Green Trade

Sung Jin Kang et al.

Summary: This study found that promoting environment-related tax increases green exports among high-income countries. Additionally, the increase in a country's green trade depends on the energy intensity level of its trading partner countries. Low- and middle-income countries need to promote environmental policies and green production processes to enhance competitiveness in the global market.

Electronic Waste, an Environmental Problem Exported to Developing Countries: The GOOD, the BAD and the UGLY

Samuel Abalansa et al.

Summary: Electronic waste is a growing environmental issue for developed countries, with many opting to export the waste to less developed countries. While there are regulations in place, they are not fully enforced, leading to negative environmental and health impacts. Management options such as circular economy and urban mining can help reduce the impact of e-waste on the environment and workers.

Does environmental taxes achieve the carbon neutrality target of G7 economies? Evaluating the importance of environmental R&D

Adnan Safi et al.

Summary: The study highlights the significant impact of environmental taxes and R&D on consumption-based carbon emissions. It shows that in both the short- and long-run, environmental taxes, environmental R&D, and exports can significantly reduce carbon emissions, while GDP and imports enhance carbon emissions. The findings suggest that policymakers should focus on environmental R&D and taxes to achieve carbon neutrality goals in G-7 countries.
