A machine learning approach to determine bubble sizes in foam at a transparent wall

Leon Knuepfer et al.

Summary: This article discusses the use of machine learning to measure the sizes of polyhedral bubble foam in contact with a transparent wall. By training a neural network model, the images can be accurately segmented and the distribution of bubble sizes can be obtained.

Protein enrichment by foam Fractionation: Experiment and modeling

Behnam Keshavarzi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the enrichment of bovine serum albumin protein through foam fractionation. Experiments and numerical simulations were conducted to analyze the recovery and grade of the extract. The results showed that foam coalescence accelerates liquid drainage, leading to a drier extract and higher protein enrichment. The simulation model successfully reproduced the experimental results within a reasonable error range, providing a useful tool for optimization and up-scaling of protein foam fractionation.

Convective instability in sheared foam

S. Heitkam et al.

Summary: This work demonstrates that anisotropic drainage in sheared foam leads to convective instability in very long foam channels, with liquid accumulating on one side of the channel when a critical liquid fraction is exceeded. Experimental and numerical simulations show that the critical liquid fraction is smaller than previously thought by a factor of five.
